SUMMARY:
- With Regards to virtualization platforms I’ve spent the last 14 years managing, migrating, building and patching servers within a virtualized environment. I’ve worked with ESX since 2001 but it wasn’t until 2005 or 2006 when I began to build production servers on ESX.
- Between our physical servers went in number from 8 to 25. In 2008 when I began to migrate our servers from I took the opportunity to migrate the non - production servers to ESXi. In 2009 with proven server stability and a horrendous heating issue within the server room, I was able to purchase new hardware to efficiently host our servers on ESXi. By 2012 I had 125 servers to maintain upon roughly 20-25 hypervisors.
- In 2013 or 2014 I began to look into Xenserver. While we relied upon ESXI to host our servers, I was unable to procure the budget for vmotion. This forced me to manage each server in its own console. Xenserver, for me at the time, was a light at the end of the tunnel. Additionally, this solved for us an issue that plagued our backup server. I was able to introduce Xenorchestra and our server backups never ran better.
- Our internal network infrastructure I built using Catalyst 3750s in a switch stack configuration. I configured the EtherChannel to allow for a 4gb backbone to other floors in the building. The 3750s were eventually replaced with a Cisco Catalyst 6509-e allowing for a 10GB backbone between floors. Additionally, I provisioned for WIFI using a Cisco controller with 3702i Access Points. The access points were advertised to allow for configuration without a controller however that required rolling back the firmware to an older version which wasn’t something we were interested in.
- I managed our access to the outside using Cisco ASA 5500s. I created and maintained route maps, ACLs and VOIP was sent via SIP.
