  • Using SDLC, I took business requirement and designed the technical requirements or a new line of business. My portion of the project interfaced with the front end web application. This was done through DB2 stored procedures and call to web services.
  • Once in a while I am allowed to fill a need in a creative way. QBE does no use a database for the primary data storage. This is done by VSAM and GTAM file. Every time a user wanted a special report the IT staff would have to write a onetime program to extract the data. I automated this process by developing a CICS screen that take the request, produces the extract, and send a file in XML/Excel format to the user. This file is then automatically email to the requestor. This eliminated the IT staff from writing multiple programs per week. This freed up resources to do other projects.

Title: Senior Programmer Analyst

  • My ongoing project was with the healthy discount program. I worked closely with the end users, manager and director to enhance their system. I was able to combine multiple projects into one single IT project. This was done with the same number of IT hours.
  • I design and implemented a print order system. Assurant's current system would print out all the renewal packets and put them in a locked room until the mail date. If there was a policy change someone have to look thought stacks of paper to pull the policy. The New system I implemented took all the print files and stored them no a VSAM file. All the policies were access by a CICS transaction. If a change was needed the CICS transaction would delete the police and resubmit it through the renewal system.
  • This is a good example of where my diverse experience comes into play. Assurant was designing a new system to route renewals to different systems. This was a web based application that would send single policy to a given destination for review. There original plan was to send everything to the mainframe to handle the routing. I few MQ queues that eliminated the need for the mainframe and save the project 100 estimated hours.
  • Renewal Letter Project. This project gave the insurer 3 different health plan so they can choose the best plan at the lowest rates. My role in the project was to modify mainframe COBOL and CICS programs to calculate the different premium plans. I also increased the number of deductions from 40 to 100. That simple change requires a change to over 100 COBOL batch and CICS programs.
  • In my career I often have to think outside the norm. I was working with a client server system that uploaded a lot of DB2 rows into DB2 Connect. There average daily load took over 6 hours to run. I found a COBOL/XML reader program on the internet. Converted it to or data format. And loaded the DB2 rows. The mainframe program took 8 minute to run. The Cobol program was finished in under 4 hours.

BiFrost Project

  • The BiFrost project was the Famers Insurance first venture in web development. Out of 450 IT professional Farmers picked the top 5 for this project. We were sent to Charlotte, North Carolina so IBM could train use for 3 months. This project was to give potential customers the ability to get a quote on the policy.
  • The team was small only five people to start and then expanded to 15. Each person had several roles. So I did not really have an official title. I was one of two Administrators. My job was to build and maintain the servers. We had 8 application servers, 3 database servers, and 1 development server. My job was to install UNIX, DB2, Websphere and other software or all servers.
  • Once the servers were built I would then build and implement the deployment and configuration software. I wrote AUX, Perl, and UNIX scripts to deploy the application and load the databases.
  • One of my favorite accomplishments was to install Linux on the mainframe.
  • After the servers were built, my primary role was the database administrator. I would tune the production databases to get the best performance. Build or changed existing tables as the project progressed. I was responsible for all backups and disaster recovery.
  • My secondary role was the Websphere administrator. I was the backup administrator. I was still involved in setting up new servlet and refreshing the regions. I was a key person in deployment of enhancements.
  • I also was the Rational suite admin. My job was to install, maintain, and backup all the environments. I also wrote VB scripts to maintain to Clearquest issues tracing system.
  • I also maintained the Java development environment. I installed Visual age and backed up the workspaces. I migrated the environment to a different server and upgraded to WASD.
  • To load the DB2 database I wrote COBOL programs the extract data from the mainframe then send it to the DB2 server.

  • My primary responsibility was to maintain CAM or Common Access Module. Farmers use a lot of data when processing a policy. They found that DB2 is to slow to access the needed information. We built a DB2 replacement. All data is stored on DB2 tables then loaded into memory. By using memory, TSQ's and VSAM file we were able to achieve a faster response while accessing data. The calling program would pass a SQL like request to my program. I then would retrieve the correct row or rows and return it to the calling program. This module was the most use program at farmers. Any increase or decrease of performance would impact the daily production.
  • Before my work on CAM I was responsible or the Premium determination for Auto Insurance in COBOL, CICS, and DB2.
  • Farmers insurance is a bit different than most companies. There batch system is run thru 30 CICS regions. They all process asynchronies transactions. This allowed both batch, online and web to use the same backend COBOL programs.
