Software Engineer

Responsibilities:

  • Creating FORTRAN (Programmer AIX Mainframe FORTRAN and Perl - (IBM p575), and Linux/Mac/Windows workstations) apps for weather forecasters/scientists/users responsible for weather, flight, & exploration events in Antarctica.
  • Daily ‘ticket’ resolution with regard to new & legacy forecasting tools. Automation on an AIX Mainframevia Perl scripts for FORTRAN (self created) tools, using Makefiles. Support end users (UAT), daily requirements gathering, NACI & CCAC clearances.
  • WRF Preprocessing System (WPS) reduced lines of code by 25%, user interface now a match to WRF (Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) Modeling System).
  • Created the Observations Statistical Software Package (OSSP).
  • Reads 1GB weather observation data files, analyzes the data and creates online statistical reports for any previous forecast(s) by location in Antarctica. ETL process, read flat files (1 GB), transform to statically format, save to mass storage & present to web site.
  • Collected user stories on how this application should run and the reports it should generate.
  • Modified existing software to correct errors, allow it to adapt to new hardware, or to improve its performance.
  • Developed and direct software system testing and validation procedures, programming, and documentation.
  • Conferred with scientists, meteorologists, engineers, programmers to design the system, and to obtain information on project limitations, capabilities, performance requirements and interfaces.
  • Analyzed user needs and software requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints.
  • Designed, developed and modified software systems, using scientific analysis and mathematical weather models to predict and measure outcome and consequences of design. Created test scripts in Perl, testing modifications.
  • Stored, retrieved, and manipulated data for analysis of system requirements, capabilities and statistical reports.
  • Consulted with internal and external users about AMPS system results and weather tools maintenance/enhancements.
