I worked with a large team of developers building various solutions to support mortgage loan processes. I developed components that are combined into processes to support mortgage loans. Each component implemented the same interface that included one method to execute code. A business object stored URL references to components and stored data passed from each step in the process. The object is serialized and passed to the next step using TCP sockets. Services that monitor TCP sockets would dynamically load and execute components that are referenced in the business object. The service would then serialize the business object and pass it to the next step in the process using TCP sockets.
