Solutions Architect
Responsibilities:
- Chief Architect and Director of Infrastructure for Design, Development, and Implementation for Michigan SACWIS (a specialized ECM solution). Coordinated and aligned Contracting and State resources, to meet contractual agreements, establish new requirements and implementations that include mobile delivery to extend current capabilities including Mainframe. Responsible for all engagement environments including mainframe multiple release strategies with concurrent development efforts and supported resources. Responsible for all DBA, Infrastructure, and Development talent to accomplish the implementation with additional use of refactoring and ESI/Micro Services. The J2EE application was dependent on Spring, Hibernate, BPEL and TIBCO Messaging. Coached Development teams and Testing teams through a simple to complex approach to leverage which worked and tune using Dynatrace or abandon the techniques (e.g., daily scrums, XP techniques, learning from and contributing to the success of others, expanding skill bases by being thoughtful as to how the teams are designed and creating rotation patterns, etc.). Evaluated code to insure architecture was implemented per design and SLA standards. Occasionally developed code directly and occasionally built example programs to get development moving.
- Built Child Welfare Services proposals, presentations and solutions (SACWIS in Michigan and Florida). Directly involved as a solutions architect in implementation of the solution in Michigan. Studied and provided proposals for ECM solutions including FileNet, Oracle WebCenter, IBM Mainframe and Open Source Products with the recommendation to remain with supported products, such as Dynatrace, due to the sensitivity of the content and the need for long term continuity while leveraging existing skill base and inter-connectivity. To meet mobility needs, a significant refactoring of the base code was used to develop a ESI/BPEL/Micro Services based Architecture.
- Directly contributed to develop high security for mobile devices using two high security MDMs (Mobile Device Management) open source and commercial security tools. Worked on the content management component to review various solutions. Oracle’s UCM, FileNet, and Open Source solutions were studied and presented along with BPEL/ESI/TIBCO Messaging with Mainframe. Key concerns were the ability to treat the content management is a core component of the solution rather than a secondary system. The linkage is to be a part of the core application system rather than a second system that requires an individual to find the correct document and version of that document to insure a full and complete case history in a secured environment. Directly developed Java code for this effort (Eclipse based and TDD).
- Assisted with proposals for high security Illinois Toll Booth wireless charging systems and financial reporting options and reporting tools. Creating flexibility in reporting for freedom in choice of tools for clients. Provided guidance for the costing models. Developed patterns and designs for a secured adapter connector from Wi-Fi to Gmail and Google Apps. Assisted in the development planning and implementation for an ESI solution to support full DOD (Department of Defense) security requirements leveraging MuleSoft, Open Source and Proprietary technologies (initial roll out for Idaho Nuclear Laboratories (INL)). Directed local resources for a highly distributed/remote development effort.
- Provided architecture and solutions design, product evaluations and guidance for modernization efforts at United States Department of Agriculture - Rural Development (( Confidential -RD). Primary focus was to implement a Service Oriented Architecture (BPEL/SOA) Framework with Mainframe and Platform for the purpose of combining multiple applications into a cohesive and comprehensive information system. Extensive research into multiple SOA tools support including Jboss 6 and Jboss ESB, Mulesoft, Dynatrace, Oracle SOA Suite, and WSO2 among others. Implemented an AOP and JSF2.0 with WS replacement for green-screen applications to preserve business functionality while enhancing and simplifying user experience. This resulted in the selection of Jboss 6 and ESB with ESI/TIBCO messaging.
- Performed multiple technology research, reviews, and creation of proposals for future business opportunities.
- Developed detailed design specifications for General Services Agency (GSA) modernization efforts and developing a Center of Excellence (COE) model for governance for the modernization of applications to include cloud solutions such as Google Apps and/or SalesForce depending on the application requirements and characteristics. This is a migration effort away from existing Lotus Notes and MS Exchange for proven cost savings shown in previous GSA migrations, and expanding the functionality of their required and highly secured cloud-based platform.
- Wrote many sample and PoC Java and Mainframe applications to verify and jump start the full development.

Scope included designing and setting standards for application development and system performance specifications, monitoring, and tuning. Leveraged design patterns for ESI enterprise architecture including Mainframe and software (based on WebMethods BPM and ORM technologies). The only methodology known originally was waterfall. For the early implementers for an agile methodology, our team coached them through the common techniques introduced others to find the correct one to keep and how to tune or ignore those that didn’t. Eventually developing internal teams and various levels of expertise (Green, Black, etc.).
- Developed TRAs (Technical Reference Architectures) for Web Services, Security (including Authentication, Authorization and selective Encryption), BPM (Business Process Modeling), Mulesoft, including Mainframe and others). Followed an Oracle RODOD with TDD approach but implemented using the BPEL/WebMethods tool set previously selected by the Federal Systems client. Tomcat was defined for the WebServer and WebMethods on Unix for the App Server with TIBCO Messaging.
