PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

Assistant professor and director

Confidential

Responsibilities:

  • Installed and configured ESXi hypervisor on rack servers
  • Installed and configured a VMware View server
  • Setup windows network including Domain Controller
  • Installed and configured router and switches.

Sr. Engineer

Responsibilities:

  • Developed several java-based AWS utilities to manage auto-scaling groups. Tools utilized different AWS APIs including ec2, cloud-formation, auto-scaling, S3 as well as jsch and others.
  • Did a study to estimate AWS resource usage and cost for a pipeline system that handles map updates. Study found that cost grows linearly with number of tiles changes, also, most of cost is coming from ec2 instance price. Therefore, most-effective way to save on cost is to terminate ec2 instances when not in use and to use micro instances when possible.
  • Developed a Java-based SNMP manager that monitors Nokia’s Xpress cloud-based browser. The tool graphs per-minute metrics such as processing delays per user, total number of successful responses to users, and other service-specific metrics. Every minute, the tool collects 211-snmp variables from around 1200 boxes (largest DC), calculates metrics and graphs those metrics in real-time. After handling a couple issues, the monitoring tool has been deployed and perfectly running for over 9 months now. To meet strict real-time and scalability requirements, the tool is multi-threaded and uses Java Executor framework, Round-Robin Database (RRD) to store time series, SNMP4J to pull SNMP agent and JFReechart library to generate per-minute graphs. In data centers deployed with Amazon EC2, the monitoring tool also uses AWS APIs such as EC2 API, Elastic Load Balancer API to pull list of active boxes for monitoring. This functionality is particularly vital considering elastic scaling, where boxes go online and offline on the fly.
  • Investigated with other team members the use of opentsdb/hbase/Hadoop to store per-minute time-series with respect to scalability and real-time performance.
  • Participated and coordinated the development of a semi-real-time data collection and transportation system. The system collects snmp and sysstat metrics from each server every minute and pushes them through a pipeline and eventually into AWS Redshift. System consists of multiple components. My primary responsibilities include coordination of efforts, design of component interface, trouble-shoot and debug problems with different components, and development of one component (transporter) that imports zipped files from AWS S3 into AWS Redshift. Meeting timing requirements is the primary design goal, transporter exhibits a linear performance trend (774,180 records in 24 sec, and 3,034,940 records in 40 sec). The system is being phased-in in each data-center.
  • Prepared and presented a demo for network operations team explaining the different system component and installation procedure. Also, helped and supported network operations team with deployment and debugging and resolving issues in production environment.
  • Developed Wiki pages to document software systems, design and installation and deployment procedures.
