Application Development Engineer
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the entire infrastructure software used by Factiva to support a 24x7 production system with over 400 servers and an integration/development environment with over 600 computers. Infrastructure based on XIPC, a third party middleware queuing system. Various programs run on each server and one code base used to generate executables and C++ libraries for tru64, Linux, Solaris and Windows. Everything multi-threaded and multi-platform.
- Added ANDRE (Authoritative Network Dynamic Routing Engine) to the infrastructure system to provide an easy standard way to take a machine off line for maintenance. Received a Factiva Significant Achiever for taking ANDRE from conception and requirements generation to implementation and deployment.
- Improved infrastructure reliability by modifying an infrastructure program and running tests to prove that the program crashed because of a multi-threading related bug in a third party Linux library, resulting in a fix by the vendor.
- Improved software productivity by updating the Factiva infrastructure library code to use the latest C++ compiler release on each platform which allowed all projects to use the latest C++ features.
- Reduced application development costs by designing and implementing two Java class libraries that allow Java programs to interface to the Factiva infrastructure.
- Improved software productivity by the design and implementation of a Genie (Generic Infrastructure Environment) library built on top of the infrastructure C++ framework that allowed using a simple configuration file to replace complicated configuration code.
- Improved overall response time and mitigated the need for hardware upgrades by designing and implementing a caching process that used an external cache to store and retrieve server responses.
