Systems Engineer
Responsibilities:
- Partner with Business Analyst to understand reporting requests and independently deliver data in an intuitive and actionable format within the Microsoft Visual Studio suite, from SSRS tabular or matrix reports that drills down to a different granularity within the same report or link the report to a new solution such as Power Query.Augmented Microsoft SSRS templates, report parts, and style sheets using Visual Basic, XML/XAML and HTML that enabled faster turnaround of data requests, consistent messaging and definitions to front line workers and executive teams alike; as well as a branded portal that could be share with internal and external customers.Leveraged past work experience and to introduce new reporting concepts techniques and tools intended to increase the portfolio of reporting solutions out team could provide as well as give consumers alternative approaches to consume data and increased flexibility to self-serve their data with more confidence and better inform future requests.Created interactive data aggregation, manipulation and delivery using Microsoft SharePoint web parts and Power Query allowing requests to move through the development life cycle more quickly by speeding data discovery, requirement gathering, development, quality assurance, and ultimately, user acceptance using the same understanding and definitions of data at every phase.Outlined a security structure for report delivery that would increase flexibility and security by allowing customers to the same report but see only the data that was relevant and secure for them and introduce the concept of applying security at stable designations such as services provided or business process rather than more fluid attributes such as department or position and mapping that process to specific security categories such as personally identifiable information or sensitive corporate information.

Senior Data Analyst
Responsibilities:
- Power BI was the spearhead to C.H. Robinson's self-service initiative. Analysts were charged with not only rewriting the underlying queries to the new Hadoop infrastructure; they were challenged to make the existing reports more performant but compelling and actionable as well. To that end, not only were new and custom visuals explored but pulling in sources from multiple locations, including API data, relational data, Excel and hand written figures to help contextualize data for the end use.
- Due to company priorities and IT’s adherence to its Waterfall approach, analysts were charged with writing procedures that more closely resembled application development rather than data collection. Builds would commonly contain temporary tables, with the familiar development routines of insert, update and delete the creation of functions, loops, etc.
- Evaluate potential resource constraints including; performance tuning, creation of cron jobs that initiated procedures, create auto generated “early warning” emails to alert when resources were spiking and needed monitoring and, potentially, killing long running queries or resource intensive procedures to stabilize the reporting server.
- Define, detail, and model, load balance pricing based on test data within the application's development environment. Ensure that application level data is correct as it is promoted up through production databases in the values it captures, as well as the structure required to deliver operational reporting and key performance indicators within the module to measure as well as relationships in place to connect to other sources structured in the data lake in OLTP (relational) as well as OLAP (analytical) structures.Identify performance opportunities as data moves from more traditional databases such as SQL Server to Hadoop. This wasn't exclusively a "literal translation" of each step from one source to the other, but a conceptual shift in approach as well to leverage Hadoop’s significant boost in processing ability as well as some of its limitations.Identify "quick wins", as well as larger projects that may not be worth the resource spend with new launches scheduled that would provide better results and make current development obsolete.Gain working knowledge of and utilize new tools for data aggregation, transformation and visualization, including R (and corresponding packages) Python as well as other modeling tools to support the company until a unified platform is in place.
