PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Test Engineering Manager

Confidential, Long Lake, IL

Responsibilities:

  • Began career here with a goal of transferring and combining wireless repair and custom production from, I successfully hired and trained new team in STL and was able to move assembly and test within 6 months.
  • Wrote and introduced a new test platform in Labview for all currently shipping products. Eliminated custom test pcb’s, and streamlined the factory test process and flow. Afterward, the first time failure rate in the factory was decreased from 20% to 1% and test time was decreased by 60 sec/unit.
  • Based on the success of the wireless test platform, I was promoted to do the same for the Networking sector of RLC. Previously no automation here existed. Hired and trained two test engineers and we created an automated test suite within 12 months. We also updated documentation which hadn’t been touched in years.
  • Introduced data logging and a test metrics dashboard tool for production in all locations. Tool is capable of providing yield metrics, failure reports, test result averages, bench utilization statistics, cpk charts and similar minitab functions.
  • Purchased and automated new RF test equipment for Cellular (R&S CMU500) and GPS (GSG - 5). Previously these tests we performed OTA and underperforming units were not being detected in high volume manufacturing. Created custom Arduino based wifi RF tester for pre-tested module.
  • Automated the ESN/IMEI file upload process for all US and Canadian based cellular carriers. Previously, this was all done by hand and device activation errors were common.
  • NPI for 30+ new LTE and Wi-Fi products. NPI for 105+ networking products. Team handles all test creation and documentation, prototype board debug, equipment selection and design.
  • Lead design validation efforts in the lab for new hybrid wireless/RTU product (RAM9931). Also responsible for production line equipment matrix, factory layout, and business case proposals for capital equipment.
  • Also served as part of the core team for ERP implementation with IFS. Wrote SQL scripts for automation of dozens of functions across the business. Wrote an inventory transfer utility in Labview that interfaces with IFS in .NET and XML to identify and perform all inventory transfers based on shop order, FIFO logic, etc.

Senior Staff HW Platform Electrical Test Specialist

Confidential - Libertyville, IL

Responsibilities:

  • Performed all 3GPP physical layer testing for LTE and CDMA including RF driver development in Labview with the R&S CMW500, CMU200. Firmware evaluation and test architecture and deployment.
  • Developed .NET interface to Labview for AgilentVSA driver. Used this to demodulate IQ data for CDMA during pre-silicon test development and verify against spec before wafer fab.
  • Lead regulatory RF compliance automated test efforts for LTE and CDMA.
  • Program management for lab testing and circuit validation of the LTE reference design.

Test and Validation Engineering Manager

Confidential - Libertyville, IL

Responsibilities:

  • Worked cross functionally with all the HW development teams. Responsible for all baseband system level test requirements, verification plans, strategy, and test algorithm delivery to the prototype factory for all new Mobile devices products out of Libertyville.
  • Managed a 4 year, multi product, flip production/test outsourcing project to Foxconn, China. My team and I created an electrical simulation of the main phone as to avoid sending our prototype 3G RF designs overseas. We also co-developed with nVidia, all the SW necessary to control the display, imagers, touch screens etc. For testing, we wrote all necessary tools, test plans, and procedures in Labview and C++. Then, successfully transferred this test suite and documentation to multiple locations around the world.
  • Won multiple awards from the business team for my camera image testing/processing tools using Labview. I created these tools out of a need to test the original VGA camera phones on 3G products and RAZR for color, focus, rotation, blemish etc. These tools continue to evolve as Motorola introduces larger resolutions, added autofocus, xenon flash, etc. The business team planned to license them for sale to other companies testing and were awarded trade secret status.
  • Created a method for testing audio frequency response of phone speakers in a noisy factory environment. Modeled in Matlab, then converted to Labview and compiled to dll for factory integration. This was also awarded trade secret status. Until I introduced this method, only a manual sound check was done on every unit. After implementation, we were able to capture multiple different failure modes that went previously undetected to the consumer. This improved audio quality on all Motorola phones significantly. This project was the basis for a colleagues’ work on his six sigma green belt.
  • Worked on a cross functional team to develop an automated platform for the purpose of testing phone SW quality. This empowered teams of SW developers to be able to submit their code for evaluation against the selected regulatory specification, and then receive a detailed metrics report via email.
  • Lead monthly team code reviews and helped develop configuration management processes in both SourceSafe, and then eventually migrating to Clearcase.
  • Used six sigma tools to improve test/manufacturing processes, drive cycle time reduction, automate, and reduce defects where applicable.
  • Coordinated failure analysis and implemented corrective action for returned products and discrepant material, cutting defects to as little as 5%.
  • Along with the SW test command team, we pioneered an internal method of phone self test in a proprietary language. This method required no PC and limited operator assistance. This is was especially effective in the Motorola China factories for FQA checking. This was also used to reduce factory prototype implementation time by 80%.
  • Evaluated all new and prototype test equipment for possible purchase for test labs. Wrote SW automation support drivers for new test equipment for inclusion into our test suite.
  • Initiated DFT/DFM on all new product introductions and concurrently work with product design engineering teams on all NPI programs, taking ownership on manufacturing deliverables.
