- My average daily duties included preparing and configuring new sites for network acceptance and site turn up before sites went public and pass traffic through them. I would remotely configure Omnitronix site controllers and name the relays to the proper naming conventions and send them to the tech in the proper market. Verify serial backdoor pass through and labels and communication parameters. I would configure the Foundry netiron switches and routers with the proper port names and tag the various ports into the proper VLANS, set the speed, duplex and cable types. Spanning tree setup per market design spec. I was responsible for configuring every piece of equipment at a site and test that its operation is up to standards. I setup and configured Point to
- Point Radios for Ethernet and VOIP RF backhaul. Set and verified the signal path RSL levels for Dragonwave,
- Redline and Motorolla Orthogon Radio links working in the licensed band of 11, 18, 23 GHz and unlicensed bands of 5.8 and 24 Ghz. Some links would need to have the encryption setup configured dependant on design spec. Interference checks and implement out of band management values and new passwords. I would configure the new Nextnet Base Station Transceivers (BTS) with their proper channel plans and Radius authentication servers, verify GPS device lock and airlink state. NTP Setup. Put new BTS(s) DNS names into
- Nextnet access provider (AP) server as well as into the ISP server. I would setup the Valere site power supplies and check for proper voltage and operation values as well as check battery and thermal thresholds.
- Setup of cellular wireless backup back haul DIGI modems and made sure the firmware was up to date if not, then a TFTP flash file was loaded on these devices. I managed DNS records and IP address tables (provisioning) for this National ISP Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) Used VPN tunnel to securely access the network monitoring consoles for the pre-production servers and the production environment. Responsible for adding the new devices into Castlerock SNMPc. All of the newly commissioned devices would require me to set the proper priority / severity levels for the SNMP traps, as well as the traps of interest, the community strings and the proper addresses of the trap forwarder. During bi-weekly night maintenance windows I would be on the phones with various techs at planned time slots in different markets to go over a AC power failover, site battery backup and discharge levels and to test all of the devices for snmp trap alarm arrival and acknowledgment to the NOC. I would enable the ports on the foundry and verify that there is no mismatch in duplex or speed / baud for the various components. I would then turn up the microwave shot airlinks. Monitor and analyze the interference and noise floor data to check for path alignment issues. Update internal site database information.
- I would also verify network topology diagrams for link capacity that was planned and the actual value that was current at the time as well as frequency, radio/link type and candidate status manually by hand. I also created scripts from the command line references for all of these devices to help ease the loading and checking of configuration information within the Tasman and other pieces of site equipment. I wrote these in VBscript and used SecureCRT to execute the scripts. I would bind Field Technician's test CPE to an IP address and verify proper network connectivity to the wireless CPE. I was 1 out of a team of 5 people that handled the site acceptance test setup and verification for production readiness for this ISP.
