EXPERIENCE:

Senior Virtualization Engineer/DevOPS Advocate/Developer

Confidential

Responsibilities:

  • Member of Cloud Infrastructure team
  • Worked as a collaborative team to migrate our legacy datacenter consisting of Dell Blades, Dell Compellent storage, Solidfire storage, Dell switches, VMware NSX and vSphere 5.5 environment to a new datacenter. The new datacenter was designed in an availability zone setup. Management zones, network zones and compute zones. Each compute zone consisted of its own independent Pure Storage array(s), Cisco leaf switches and Cisco Confidential blades. This new environment was driven as SDN provided by Cisco ACI, AVI load balancers, as well as Citrix NetScaler’s.
  • Architected, developed and delivered a solution consisting of PowerDNS for external DNS services which was migrated from an F5 GTM solution. This solution also consisted of providing IPAM functionality. In addition to this solution it also provided for an automated provisioning and management including native API’s. With these exposed API’s I developed some Python code to easily manage zones, records etc. and automate.
  • Architected, developed and delivered a complete highly available 21 - node ELK Stack deployment for log aggregation from all vSphere hosts, firewalls, load balancers, switches, routers, Windows and Linux systems. This solution consisted of developing the logic within the Logstash parsing to send out notifications, execute additional logic, as well as provide correlation between events.
  • Architected, developed and delivered an Anycast DNS solution based on Quagga (OSPF) and PowerDNS to provide wide scaling of DNS infrastructure within the internal network.
  • Architected, developed and put together a POC for a NAS solution which was built upon Debian Linux, Samba, GlusterFS and CTDB. This solution provided a highly scalable and redundant NAS solution. This solution was completely driven by automation provided by using Ansible.
  • Developed internal training materials for POC’s, new emerging technology and theoretical designs. These training materials were used to present outside of the infrastructure team with other teams to show things such as automation (Ansible, Rundeck and Jenkins), infrastructure as code, version control, code review and micro-services. Being able to expose others to new emerging ways to do things using technologies such as Docker, Vagrant, OpenStack, Rancher and etc. This proved to be a huge win for the organizations since everyone could provide input in both directions. Everyone learning from each other. This also began the journey for me personally as being a DevOPS advocate.
  • Training labs were created to allow for others to discover these new ways to do things leveraging Vagrant environments being provisioned using Ansible. By doing this I could also tailor each lab for the specific use case such as network routing and switching using Quagga using routing protocols such as OSPF and BGP. Other use cases included such things as building out clustered solutions such as Elasticsearch, MariaDB MySQL, GlusterFS and etc.
  • Architected, implemented and managed a new vSphere 5.5 environment which also included VMware NSX.
