Database Administrator - Open VMS/Dec Alpha/Adabas

Responsibilities:

In my current position as the Database Administrator for PIB, my day to day responsibilities include Administration of Adabas version 4.1.1 running on Open VMS on a Dec Alpha server. Our application environment includes Natural 2.1, Natural 5, and Attunity which is used to code SQL against the Adabas Nucleus. I maintain the file structures in Predict and Attunity. Entire X Broker Communicator ver 7.3 is used to run our RPC servers, which support EDI dental claim processing and claims systems. I am responsible for management of these servers, and their production support. As the security co-ordinator for PIB/RWAM I have been tasked with the creation of security intrusion procedures, and ensuring they are adhered to. I have assumed responsibility for the two monthly billing cycles for Home Hardware, and other RWAM clients. These are complicated off hours batch processes that generate the company’s revenue. I have also produced the operational documentation for running this processes as that did not exist prior to my arrival.

HRMS Prod. Support Consultant

Responsibilities:

Fairview had a legacy system Natural Adabas that was the core of the Human Resources Management System. This system is responsible for paying 23,000 employees bi-weekly, and is a critical part of their day to day operations. The primary focus of the job is production support and enhancements of this Natural Adabas system. As a team we monitored the bi-weekly payroll and are prepared to trouble shoot and restart this critical batch application. Another aspect of this job is day call support of the HRMS Service Now ticketing system for incoming work request for the HRMS Team. These tickets are a wide range of activities supporting all kinds of server based systems as well. These systems included Kronos, Onestaff and others. Many of these server based systems required writing SQL queries and Oracle knowledge to support them. I worked remotely from Hamilton, Ontario 100% of the time for this position after training for 3 months in Minneapolis. Development of a replacement system was successful and was the reason for the contract ending.

Adabas DBA Production Support

Responsibilities:

GMAC maintains 50 database environments in their development and production regions supporting insurance business for 5 insurance companies. My role here was to work with the other senior DBA is to support the day to day operations of the Adabas environment. These duties include monitoring of back ups, on-call support, file changes, application role outs, Predict data dictionary maintenance, environment restores and support of application testing activities. We were actively involved in supporting all application development activities, operating system upgrades, and product upgrades. In addition to this I was responsible for producing a KAP document for Wipro the consulting vendor. This KAP document (Knowledge Acquisition Process) detailed aspect of all database service requests for training resource to fulfill this role. Data modeling was done using and exist set of models in ERWIN and file changes an additions were updated as application changes were developed.

Software Upgrades

Responsibilities:

On this contract, I was project lead, in charge of upgrades for Natural Predict and Adabas. The environment required upgrades of Natural and Predict in order to be on supported versions for an MVS Zos upgrade from version 1.4 to 1.7. The environment was Natural 3.1.6 and Predict 3.4.2. Following Software AG advise we performed three upgrades to Natural to 4.1.4 and two upgrades to Predict to Predict 4.3.2. I also completed an upgrade of Adabas from 7.1.3 to 7.4.4 which included upgrading APAS and installation of a new SVC for the new Adabas nucleus.

Production Support

Responsibilities:

This contract position has me working in St. Louis 3 nights a week doing production support work for GMAC Financing. As part of a team of 4 people we work to run the business of five insurance companies owned by GMAC. This position requires extensive knowledge of Natural, Adabas, Cobol, MVS JCL, and N2O. This position required monitoring overnight batch, JCL fixes, emergency program fixes and migrations, data repairs. Completion of batch processes was critical so online systems would be up and running for day business. The skills were Natural, Adabas, DB2, SQL, TSO/ISPF, and FileAid.

Adabas Natural Cobol, Consultant

Responsibilities:

Adabas Natural Predict COBOL JCL Assembler Oracle, On-line and batch Natural Programming, VSAM, MVS JCL. I was hired to apply enhancements to the aircraft part maintenance system. This plant ran a lean IT staff and eventually closed ending the contract. The programming enhancements were successfully completed, and I also gained experience supporting the Oracle data repository which received daily updates from the mainframe. The skills required for that include writing SQL and trouble shooting Oracle response codes.

Adabas DBA/Team Lead

Responsibilities:

As the DBA for the national business regstry I was responsible for the day to day operations of the the Central Frame Data Base tracking all businesses in Canada and reporting our statistics directly to parliament. Monthly updates from Revenue Canada required on call support. Adabas utilities skills were required to manage production and test environments, and monitor there performance. Natural Security and ACF2 rules management were another aspect of this position. Maintenance of the existing data models were done in ERWIN adding new and maintaining existing data elements. I also led a team of 3 Jr. Developers. mentoring them on Natural/Adabas technology. Internal Service Requests required me to develop standard fix documents and train my junior staff in data repairs. A backlog of 250 of these existed, when I took over the position and I managed to reduced an average monthly total to around 18.
