PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Senior Linux Systems Engineer

Responsibilities:

  • I am a Sr. Linux Systems and Build Engineer working on the Security Engineering Build team. We build and maintain the Security Infrastructure for Oracle, including Pre - Production, Commercial, and Government/DoD .
  • This includes all of the bastions, hypervisors, load balancers/proxies, packet capture, intrusion detection and penetration testing, packet flow, repository, and Argus systems amongst others.
  • We utilize automated remote deployment tools during this process, centered around Chef.
  • Previously I was a Linux Systems and Build Engineer working on the PEO Linux build team. I built Exadata SKUs, as well as stand-alone Dom0's (and all necessary Linux and Windows DomUs) and Bare Metal servers for various projects.
  • As part of this effort, I have verified US citizenship and passed my background checks to acquire both remote and physical access to government networks and cages (both Fed/Civ & DoD).

Virtualization Engineer

Responsibilities:

  • As a Virtualization Engineer I handled both “business as usual” activities (ESXi upgrades and patches, host firmware upgrades, datastore creation, storage reorganization, host and cluster maintenance, etc.) and ongoing/upcoming projects, system expansions, etc.
  • Some of the projects I have been part of are vCenter and ESXi major version upgrades (v4 to v5), VDI (VMWare View) major version upgrades and complete environment redesign (v4 to v6), complete storage system redesign (we changed our storage vendor and platform, and we used the opportunity to modernize our entire datastore system configuration), ESXi host hardware platform replacement (Cisco UCS to Dell blades), and several others.
  • We support over 100 ESXi hosts, 30 ESXi & VDI infrastructure servers, and roughly 2000 server VMs and 1500 VDI desktops, all with a staff of 3 Engineers (only 2 Engineers for the last 4 months of that time). I served “double-duty” in this position and my previous (UNIX Architect) for 3 months during the transition period to ensure my previous team had my position filled. Because the VMWare infrastructure servers (vCenter, the VDI Connection and Security servers, etc) all run on Windows, I have developed a familiarity with the navigation and general operation of Windows 2012 and 2008.
  • While not to the System engineer level (since my duties did not require it) I can perform general maintenance and light admin duties (restarting services, defragmenting disks, etc) as necessary, and am always willing to learn whatever is needed to complete the task at hand.

Sr. UNIX Systems Architect - Team Lead

Responsibilities:

  • As a Sr. UNIX Systems Architect I handled the engineering reviews for new UNIX projects, system builds, infrastructure changes, and OS/middleware deployments. I supported three environments: Production, Test/Development/User Acceptance Testing (UAT), and Disaster Recovery (DR). This included physical servers, virtual servers (on VMware), and appliances.
  • On a daily basis I handled trouble tickets, customer escalations, server builds, problem resolution, as well as the various management “fire drills” that inevitably arise. More “long term”, I helped to build our systems and support infrastructure.
  • I built our repository server that supports our Red Hat Linux (RHEL4-6) and middleware builds, and implemented our Red Hat Satellite Server. I fight for redundancy and stability in every way possible, RAID mirrors, NIC bonding using integrated and PCI Ethernet ports, SAN multipathing, redundant Ethernet and fiber switches, etc. My goal is to always build and deploy the most stable platform possible for my customers, and to maximize their uptime and system satisfaction.
  • In addition, we trended usage statistics and make adjustments (RAM, CPU, etc.) to remove any bottlenecks that appear as we scale our environment.
  • My Linux skills include builds/deployments, file/directory security, AD integration, partition maintenance/repair, LVM, SAN configuration, OS streamlining and optimization, CLI daily activities (no GUI needed), log analysis, disk replacement and hardware maintenance/replacement, protocol configuration (NFS, NTP, etc), SWAP space management, network interface configuration, package and patch installation, and many others.

Systems Administrator

Responsibilities:

  • I was hired before the center was opened for the Technical Support staff of a new inbound call center. I assisted in the opening of the Rockford/Loves Park branch, and all new client start-ups for that branch.
  • These duties included application selection, development and testing, user and application support, tape backups, and running new cat3 and cat5 wiring.
  • Other duties included creating custom patch cables, disk imaging, application and OS troubleshooting (server and desktop) in a Win 9x/NT 4.0 environments, printer maintenance, readying workstations for new client software in an extremely dynamic environment, and miscellaneous functions on our Tandem Himalaya system.
  • I also gained familiarity with Novel Client 4.11 through 4.7, and NetWare Administrator.
