Permanent - Applications/Systems Programmer
Technical skills used: VS COBOL, ASSEMBLER, VSAM, CICS, CEDF, CECI, CEMT, BMS, DOS/VSE/SP, IDCAMS, SYNCSORT, DITTO, EASYTRIEVE PLUS, ICCF.
Responsibilities:
- 15% of the programs were in ASSEMBLER. I converted them all to COBOL.
- None of the CICS programs at Confidential were pseudo conversational. I converted them all to pseudo conversational.
- A lot of space problems were occurring with their non-VSAM and VSAM files. I corrected all of these and freed up 25% of all their disk space.
- A lot of S0C7 abends were occurring. Mostly due to blank records being passed to update programs where spaces were trying to be moved to numeric fields which caused the S0C7 abends. I wrote COBOL edit programs for all of these which ran before the update programs ran and weeded out all of the records with bad data. This eliminated all of the S0C7 abends.
- The Accounts Payable system was a tape to tape based system. I redesigned it to be a VSAM file based system using CICS and BMS. I designed the system flow, files, file layouts, reports, online input screens, online inquiry screens, JCL, scheduling, and documentation. I did all of the file conversions.
- The General Ledger system was a non-VSAM to non-VSAM based system. I redesigned it to be a VSAM file based system using CICS and BMS. I designed the system flow, files, file layouts, reports, online input screens, online inquiry screens, JCL, scheduling, and documentation. I did all of the file conversions.
- I was assigned to maintain CICS, EASYTRIEVE PLUS, and SYNCSORT. I updated the CICS tables and installed new releases of all of these.
- I became the System Programmer. I maintained all hardware and software. I set up IPL’s, did IML’s, cut the system files down from 15 to just 5, and installed DOS/VSE/SP 2.1.4 by myself. I worked with IBM System Engineers and there were times where I fixed a problem before they did. One problem was that we could not create an alternate index file for any of our VSAM files. IBM came in, worked on it, went to lunch, came back, and I had it fixed. All that I did was add two cards to the IPL process.
