Over sixteen years of Linux and UNIX system administration experience, mostly in a 24x7 production environment supporting critical patient-care and business-related applications and databases relied upon daily by thousands of health care personnel, faculty, staff, and students at one of the country's top universities and medical centers. During that period, the technical infrastructure managed by my team grew from a handful of systems with no centralized storage and limited availability to an 800 server environment spread across three geographically separate facilities with redundancy at the server, storage, network, database, and application layers. To support this growth, I implemented numerous technology enhancements such as storage area networks, server virtualization, network and application load balancing, and centralized management and monitoring.

- Provided leadership and technical guidance to the systems administration team in a rapidly changing multi-tiered application-hosting environment. The 400 systems maintained by this team consisted primarily of both physical and virtual Ubuntu and CentOS servers hosted on geographically separated VMware and AWS infrastructures. These systems served as the foundation for various application and data platforms including Oracle, ColdFusion, MongoDB, Solr, and Node.js.

- Managed a team of eleven system administrators responsible for the deployment and administration of 800 systems, both physical and virtual, running numerous variants of RedHat Enterprise Linux, HP-UX, Solaris, and Windows. These systems supported critical patient-care and business-oriented functions for the entire university and medical center.
- Played a leading role in the deployment of an enterprise-class server virtualization environment based on VMware solutions. High-Availability, Dynamic Resource Scheduling, vMotion, VLAN tagging, and snapshotting were fully utilized. Notable benefits included: more efficient utilization of physical resources CPU, memory, network bandwidth, power, etc greater standardization of system configurations through the use of templates increased disaster recovery capability and rapid deployment of new systems.
- Enhanced the performance and availability of critical data by implementing various storage-level components, including EMC Symmetrix disk arrays, storage area networks, and enterprise-level NAS appliances.
- Deployed numerous RedHat Linux servers in support of Oracle RAC database clusters over the years. When originally implemented in 2003, these introduced a significant increase in the level of availability for Vanderbilt's critical data.
- Ensured the availability of databases/applications via multiple clustering technologies, including HP's MC/ServiceGuard on both HP-UX and Linux and RedHat's Cluster Suite products.
- Greatly enhanced the institution's application hosting capabilities by participating in the deployments of multi-tiered and redundant application server environments based on Oracle Application Server OAS and WebLogic.
- Facilitated new hardware acquisitions by continuously monitoring the growth of the environment, seeking out more effective technologies, working with both current and prospective vendors, participating in hardware evaluation programs, and making recommendations to senior leadership prior to purchasing.
- Significantly increased the robustness of the institution's management and monitoring environment by introducing and maintaining solutions such as: HP System Insight Manager, Sitescope, Nagios, cfengine, RedHat Satellite Server, and VMware vCenter.
