Senior Design/Network Architect
Redesign and modernize the campus infrastructure as well manage and maintain the current LAN while implementing the new network. Champion a new culture of fiscal responsibility throughout IT in response to continuously shrinking government budgets for infrastructure equipment Report to senior management on daily production issues, projects, and strategic planning designs Manage and maintain network security on the campus. Design and manage the build out of there DR facility for survivability in the event of a total failure in there data center. Redesign rack and cable management in the current data center of new infrastructure.
Selected Achievements:
Network design, modernization and implementation of NIEHS campus of over 250 node infrastructure to bring the current campus into the 21st century of technology. The design included a new data center build out, core backbone, distribution layer design, access layer, DR, DMZ, Firewalls and instrument network. To help keep the campus secure and have mobility there was new SSL VPN design which allows for access into the campus via PIV card, tokens with two factor authentication. The new infrastructure consists of all Cisco equipment ranging from Cisco Catalyst 6500, 4500, 2900 switches, Cisco 3700, 1900, 2900, 3900 routers, Nexus 7K's, 5K's, 2K's, 1K's core backbone and Cisco 5585 S20, S10 ASA Firewalls. This design allows for ten gigabit uplinks to the entire new infrastructure which is incorporated to handle the bandwidth demands put on the LAN. With this new networking design the campus needed a complete re-design of the entire fiber plant and power to handle their new networking equipment. The fiber plant was completely updated with all single mode blown-in fiber which allows for future growth without running new conduit. I managed the project during the design and installation phase of the project and had to verify installation to sign off on the design at the end of the project. The entire power load was surveyed in each closest and facility which addresses concerns of sufficient or non-sufficient power for each of new equipment specs on their load requirements.

Manage and maintain a national wide area network which consists of over 1400 nodes, a National Computing Center which is part of an 800 million ITS-EPA contract. Provide team leadership and mentoring for a group of engineers initiate and execute change management processes administer and monitor technology changes. Take a lead role on high-profile, politically charged projects critical to maintaining long-term LAN/WAN access. Champion a new culture of fiscal responsibility throughout IT in response to continuously shrinking government budgets for infrastructure equipment. Report to senior management on daily production issues, projects, and strategic planning designs Manage and maintain network security in the Agency's disaster recovery facility.
Selected Achievements:
- Re-designed and implemented the National Computing Center to help leverage the Agency's data center growth for hosting new applications and virtualization of all new and old servers. Overall owner for the technical integrity of network solutions being deployed in the data center. This includes validating the integrity of the design from a topology, equipment, software, and configuration perspective. This design included installing Cisco Catalysts 6500 series L3/L2 switches in the distribution layer and access layer. With this new design ten gigabit uplinks were incorporated to handle the bandwidth demands put on the LAN. The core upgrade consisted of Cisco 7600 series L3 routers with OC3 circuits connecting to the MPLS cloud out into the Wide Area WAN.
- Engineered the campus LAN separation from the National Computing Center which consisted of two Catalyst series 6500 switches. Develop technical solutions including network components, physical and logical topologies, addressing plans, routing policies, and management scheme. Develop and document technical Executive Presentations, design documents, implementation and transformation strategies and plans. These L2/L3 switches were configured to separate the campus L2 traffic from the data center domain.
- Lead engineer in the design of their 10 terabyte replication project. This design entailed replication traffic that transverses from the National Computing Center to Colorado. This replication is leveraged from 4 McData Fibre channel switches out to the MPLS cloud over to DR facility.
- Designed and implemented EPA's DR facility out west in the event there was a disaster or network failure. The design included an OC3 circuit out to the MPLS cloud to provide security, application hosting, and internet service with 7200 and 7600 series routers.
- Assumed a Team lead role during a period when the account was experiencing a high turn-over rate made critical decisions concerning employee performance evaluation, while continuing to maintain world-class network. This process enabled the rate of turnover to be reduced by 75 through proper training, morale-boosting initiatives, and a natural ability to motivate people.
- Responsible to gather vendor information along with pricing and quotes for all projects slated for delivery in any network design that is needed to move forward. Develop complex hardware and software configuration templates e.g., routers, switching systems, multiplexers based upon network application profiles and connectivity, traffic and performance requirements.

deploying over 500 phones, installing a collapsed backbone and access layer network. This equipment was all Cisco Catalysts 6500 series routers/switches and 3500 series switches in the closets. The access switches were deployed to 20 LAN closets where Cisco IP phones and workstations were patched into. My team and I then worked with the police stations, fire departments, and insurance companies for an additional seven months to provide any technical support and/or monitoring needed.

- I re-designed their complete data center and WAN to make way for new technology and growth. This design consisted of all Cisco equipment ranging from Catalyst 6500, 7200 and Pix firewalls. They had circuits ranging from T1's to OC3's along with VPN tunnels.
- Educational institution I designed and documented there Internet upgrade pre-sales proposal. In this design I worked on the Edge connections to both campus buildings. I developed an OC3 design to elevate internet congestion and configuration for their multi-homed Internet connections. QOS was put in place on both routers to police bandwidth for students and management.
- Team leader for the group that designed and implemented a large online trading feed from a financial service company out to organizations such as Bear Sterns, Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch, and Goldman Sachs. This design consisted of 2600 series routers being rolled out to over 100 sites. Once connectivity was in place a Citrix ICA thin client on trader workstations was able to connect across the WAN to Citrix servers, which allowed access of front-end trading applications to a VAX host.
