Senior Systems Engineer

  • SERVICENOW System Administrator / Lead Developer
  • Software Development CM/RM tools development :
  • My initial detail to Arbitron was strictly a Systems Engineer / Systems Administrator. During this position I developed a set of system administration tools Apache, PERL, MySql to aid in the repetitive tasks that often are associated with the administration of an enterprise wide system e.g., server shutdown and startup, software deployments, system logging, monitoring of jboss instances, etc. The development of the Toolkit gained acceptance outside of my immediate group and the ECIM group wanted to make use of it for their code migrations a.k.a, software deployments . I was transferred to ECIM, with my product, into a system engineering and support role. This product has now grown to the enterprise level supporting unmanned / automated deployments of development software and being teamed with products such as Cruise Control and Hudson and also provides automated CVS tagging, deployment, archival, and documention of all phases of the software life cycle. Since its growth to the enterprise level I have become the principle of a multi-cultural multi-regional and globally dispersed software development group to include Kochi and Bangalore India.

Operations:

Arbitron utilizes the scheduling and automation enterprise tool Appworx for its scheduling backbone with ECIM being responsible for its health and welfare. My specific role, aside from 24/7 on-call support, is to provide software development for specialized jobs with examples being: generic ftp/sftp data movers, DB look ups to support report generation, software deployment, and data archival.

Customer and Developer Support:

Arbitron is a very strong software development organization requiring to be forward leaning and must instantly react to market nuances. Because of this there is always a tendency for individual development groups to want to push their product to production as fast as possible and this does not always adhere to CM/RM standards. The challenge is to gain the trust and buy in from these groups so that they do not by-pass the CM/RM processes. By integrating into these groups ECIM can introduce these processes and ensure a reliable and standard Release Management process is followed.

Software Systems Engineer

Develop project plans and project documentation for FDIC management concerning proposed initiatives and projects e.g., Statement of Work, Scope, Project Plans, etc. . Once those proposals are validated and accepted than provide the leadership, direction, and momentum to accomplish those project tasks within the timeframe specified and within the cost allocated.

Software Development:

Develop software tools to allow the Release Management team to accomplish their day to day activities. These software tools include those functions necessary to adequately and thoroughly test the development software and its impact to the baseline filesystem that is to be deployed to the FDIC QC and Production environments.

Customer Support:

Provide leadership and support to the development organizations in the area of application software deployment to the FDIC QC and Production environments. One of the prime responsibilities of the Release Management organization is to provide guidance and leadership to the development organizations as they develop and ultimately deploy their software applications. The FDIC regulations as to 'how' to properly deploy a quality product is very rigid and resides within the newly adopted Rational Unified Process i.e., the FIDC's version of SDLC . The Release Management organization has the responsibility to make that process work and to ensure all development efforts conform to that process. I believe that my strength in this area resides with my ability to form both formal and informal relationships with my customer and that relationship naturally leads to professional trust. Once trust is formed a team environment cannot help but produce quality products.

Engineer Systems Analyst II

  • Systems Deployment Application Implementation :
  • Performed deployment, installation and integration of various software products on servers hosted at Gene Logic as well as customer sites
  • Designed and developed and automated QC and archival process that monitored the cloning and integration of the Gene Logic application software and the associated ORACLE data base. After the successful completion of the monthly 'build' process this software package i.e., PERL, and embedded SQL would 'move' the application software and the associated ORACLE data base files to a protected location of the 4T EMC storage facility, ensure the integrity of that move process, then alert the developer that this action had occurred.
  • Installed and configured Oracle software and Oracle databases on Gene Logic and customer servers.
  • Automated software and content update process by replacing all manual steps with a Perl based workflow engine. This activity entailed the development of a complete functional specification for an automated system UNIX, SOLARIS and DB ORACLE 9i content update from a DLT tape drive DLT 8000 then the script development to implement these specifications i.e., Korn shell, PERL and embedded SQL . The automation of this update process eliminated the need to travel to customer sites for periodic system updates thus yielding significant cost savings.
  • Troubleshoot OS, networks and software. When deploying enterprise level severs e.g., E250, E450, V880, E240 on-site at the customer locations a thorough knowledge of networking principles TCP/IP, DNS, Ethernet architecture and problem solving skills are required as well as the ability to communicate and work within a 'mixed agenda' team environment.
  • Developed troubleshooting tools - PERL SQL scripts to ensure effective and speedy problem resolution.
  • Data Management: Manage accrual, packaging, documentation, quality control and shipping of 'raw' gene expression data in direct response to customer contract demands:
  • Implemented a Quality Control and monitoring process via PERL CGI and SQL scripts designed to verify that the gene expression data loaded into an Oracle 9i data base is actually what the customer ordered and is of the quality they expect. These orders can run into the thousands of samples and until this process was in place errors were common.
  • Virtual Private Network VPN : Designed, integrated and maintain two VPN networks that provide secure access to gene expression data to over 15 vendors worldwide:
  • Manage 10 enterprise level servers supporting 10 pharmaceutical and 20 university research departments.
  • Implement and manage the secure connections VPN IPSEC Tunnel allowing the external customer and vendor to access their specific gene expression data.
  • Designed, implemented and manage a data base and workspace backup process web based: PERL CGI and SQL scripts that backup individual customer for off-site storage.

Customer Support:

My strength is the ability to communicate at a non technical level establishing a relationship of trust. Than from an open communication identify and rectify systemic issues thereby meeting the customer's needs.
