My objective with my career path is to not only apply my current skill set and knowledge to a job but also gain as much of it as possible. I have always enjoyed working with electronics and want to continue doing so. I would like to set myself up in a position where
I have a chance to work hands - on with electrical components and computers with the opportunity for advancement within the company.
As a contractor for AEP, there is a large scope of work that this job entails. There is a mix of field work to collect data and then computer work to engineer new power poles for a certain set of standards and loading requirements.
A lot of time is spent talking with clients to ensure we are collecting the correct information for them to be able to do their jobs. Our engineering is done with a proprietary software that is one of the best in the industry.
Every day I go to work I deal with a large variety of different parts and motors that control different aspects throughout the steel plant.
Part of that job is diagnosing electrical problems and using a process to troubleshoot where in the loop the problem exists and executing the repairs. Another part of my job is lighting different types of furnaces and understanding how they work inside and out. All of these components are tied into a computer network which
I also must diagnose and troubleshoot as needed.
Fresh out of college I wanted to apply my degree in the computer industry and confidential was the first position that came up. I started there in February of 2011 and have since wanted to apply my technial skills and knowledge in other areas.
I was responsible for diagnosing and repairing computer and network problems for our clients. This involved a very deep understanding of network infrastructures and also knowing a computer inside and out. My daily job requirements consisted of working with a team to resolve problems ranging from removing a virus from a PC to working within Windows registry to taking a computer or server apart to diagnosing hardware problems with a voltmeter and everything in between.
This type of work allowed me to gain a general understanding of nearly every aspect of a computers operating system and hardware and also an understanding of schematics and electrical systems which I was able to directly apply throughout my work. A lot of the problems that we would encounter were often new to us which required us to be very proficient with our troubleshooting and being able to execute a plan of action with precision because one wrong move could cause a catastrophe.
Automotive Sales and Repair Services
I was employed with confidential as a mechanic and also a sales associate for over three years while earning my degree. This job taught me several skills that I can use to apply my skills and knowledge in future careers.
I began working at confidential as a mechanic and eventually transitioned into a sales position. As a mechanic I was able to use various diagnosing tools to find out mechanical and electrical problems and then repair them. One of the software programs we used allowed us to view schematics of the vehicles electrical system so we would be able to see what we needed to be repairing. I enjoyed the hands-on experience of this position and I gained valuable knowledge that I can apply in other fields. I was promoted to a sales associate after about a year and a half where I was able to deal directly with customers, learn great communication skills, and overall take on more responsibility. Due to the structure of NTB I could be overseeing the staff and ensuring smooth operation of day to day activities. As a sales associate
I was involved more with teamwork as I needed to communicate between other sales members as well as all of our mechanics and help them order and find parts necessary to complete the jobs they were working on.
These two different positions allowed me to gain experience from two very different job types and I left with long list of skills that will help me further develop a career on top of my degree.
Five nights out of the week there were large shipments of appliances delivered to confidential's. My job was to come in a couple of hours before the store opened when the forklifts and other equipment could be used freely on the sales floor.
I would stock the large boxes onto the shelves in a special location which required heavy lifting as well as keep track of the inventory of them to ensure there were not any discrepancies within the computer system.
If there were, then there were certain procedures to follow to ensure the problem was fixed. After the store opened and all of the stocking and inventory jobs were complete, I was then a sales associate where I dealt directly with the customer to ensure we met and exceeded their needs when shopping for new products for their homes. This is where the inventory aspect of the position was crucial because you wanted to know the product is there if the computer system says that it is.
After the sale, the sales associate is responsible to pull the sold product from the shelf and either prepare it for delivery or help load it into the customers vehicle which was often a very physically demanding task.
