Senior Linux Engineer

Responsibilities:

  • Confidential is a multi-billion dollar global investment management firm. My job was to come in to the organization and clean up the entire Linux department. I have replaced 3 senior Linux engineers and have setup this Linux / Solaris environment with many different standards I felt were necessary to keep it up with 100% uptime. This environment is over 400 Physical HP Blade and ESX Virtual RHEL systems between RHEL 5.5 and RHEL 6.1
  • Initial work would be to get all systems up to a standard. Many different flavors of Linux and UNIX were in house when starting. Completed the task of having all systems up to RHEL 5.5 and RHEL 6.1. Migrated all Ubuntu and Suse systems to RHEL. Only the systems that were SAN Attached would need to RHEL 5.5 due to the ONTAP version that we were running.
  • All system, both physical and virtual, were being maintained by Bladelogic 8.1. Physical Servers were being provisioned via PXE boot and Kickstart through Bladelogic. Virtual Servers being done through Templates via Bladleogic.
  • My specialization is an infrastructure automation with chef, writing ruby scripts and linux system administration.
  • I have experience in and can provide:
  • Automating server configuration/management with Chef.
  • TDD for chef recipes/cookbooks with test-kitchen, chefspec, serverspec.
  • Using chef on AWS platform - AWS OpsWorks.
  • Implemented rapid-provisioning and life-cycle management for Ubuntu Linux using Amazon EC2, Chef, and custom Ruby/Bash scripts.
  • Implemented rapid-provisioning and life-cycle management for Red Hat Linux using Kickstart and Puppet.
  • Automating with OpsCode Chef, testing chef recipes/cookbooks with test-kitchen/chefspec/serverspec.
  • Shell scripts written in BASH for multiple projects. Shell scripts are highly technical and maintained through RCS/CVS service. All deployed through multiple locations. Many shell scripts were using sed/awk, and other commands to help with our day to day tasks.
  • Any developers needing assistance with Shell scripting or any part of Linux would be handled through myself.
  • Handled the Linux operations of a very large storage migration from NETAPP to HITACAHI. All Linux systems changed SAN environments while online using LVM commands. No downtime needed. Once the storage team presented the LUNS, we were able to bring online through multipathing and pvmove’s to different/dev/dm.
  • While migration the SAN, also changed our NAS to an updated version of NETAPP and ONTAP. Different customers including developers and research systems had many terabytes of data that were placed on a global file system through netapp. Many apps were run on NAS to be able to run on multiple machines easily. Hardware handling the SAN on Linux is Emulex while the storage was with vfilers through VSP (Hitachi). For fast migration of different volumes we have vFilers with multiple volumes and qtree’s.
  • Handled multiple applications dealing with financials with 3rd party applications using the Multicast protocol. All systems using bonding on multiple interfaces.
  • The Linux environment was becoming around 50% virtual. Majority of configuration and administration done through VSphere. Extensive knowledge in ESX and Virtualization environment.
  • Created in house scripting through PERL and BASH to handle the backups for all Linux systems. This was handled through a primary server with RSYNC. Nightly this rsync server would backup all files outside of SAN and NAS.
  • Worked closely with the Windows Systems admins as well as handled some of the applications shared by Windows and Linux. Centrify 4 was run off AD from Windows. Multiple Centrify zone’s were running our entire Linux fleet.
  • Primary owner of many applications as well as sole owner of the Linux environment. In this year, I was able to start many different relationships with all of our customers and have a completely automated Linux environment.
