Objective

  • Challenging administration position within the data protection field that utilizes my skills and experience in the enterprise storage segment
  • Responsibilities included: Enterprise backup administrator and architect NetWorker and TSM , third level support for the global operations team and project lead.
  • Backup Infrastructure Refresh - Planned and rolled out the upgrade of all tape library infrastructure. Worked with
  • fellow SMEs to design the upgrade to IBM E06 tape drives in the 3584 library for expansion and tape encryption projects. Led the team in the installation, allocation and configuration of the affected 15 datazones overseeing environment dataset of 3 PB.
  • Global NetWorker Upgrade Designed and implemented NetWorker upgrades of all North American GS backup systems to NetWorker version 7.6 followed by version 8. Produced documentation standards for the global backup teams of GS and led the upgrade projects across the regions starting in America followed by EMEA and Asia.
  • Virtual Tape Library Upgrade Brought the EMC EDL tape libraries in North America to the latest supported versions. Discovered software bugs which seriously affected GS backups and worked with vendor support teams to provide a solution for the environment. Initiated the transition to Data Domain deduplication within GS.

Backup Storage Consultant

  • Responsibilities included: Enterprise backup administrator and architect Networker and Netbackup , daily backup and recovery operations, general unix system administration, and storage allocations.
  • Significant Projects:
  • Migration from VTL to Data Domain Dedup architecture - Designed the architecture for the migration to a deduplication and replication solution for enterprise backups. Worked with EMC engineers to design an efficient solution with high throughput at a reduced financial expenditure.
  • Migration to VTL backups - Designed and implemented the movement from Storage Tek tape libraries to EMC EDL virtual tape libraries and IBM 3310 physical tape libraries with LTO4 drives. Transitioned from Brocade 4100 fibre switches to Cisco MDS9513 director switches. Introduced 10 GigE networks to the backup environment to drive the VTL sufficiently. Created various automated scripting for tape cloning, replication and reporting. Migrated 1200 NetWorker clients from standard physical tape backups to virtual tape backups.
  • Backup Infrastructure Phase III Created a sophisticated backup environment which provides daily backups to disk within local datacenters which is then replicated offsite to external datacenters and written to tape D2D2T . Designed the topography of the backup infrastructure with NetApp R200/FAS3050 nearstore systems connected via dedicated Gigabit WAN links between three datacenters with redundant network connectivity. Clients were designed to backup via rsync locally, replicate via NetApp snapmirror and cut to tape remotely with EMC NetWorker. Offsite data storage was obtained without any physical media transportation. Created and maintained the automated scripts and reporting tools for this environment. Documented the design and created the process control manuals for the environment.
  • Backup Infrastructure Phase II - Designed the new backup environment for Citigroup Japan. Upgraded an environment of eight backup servers with local DLT auto-changers to fibre channel attached library configurations of LTO2 and LTO3 drives. Consolidated the backup servers to two datazones with six storage nodes for improved performance, efficiency and centralization. Upgraded the Legato Networker 6.1 servers to version 7.2. Doubled the fibre channel capacity with Brocade 4100 switches while introducing redundancy and high availability to the environment. Managed over 1000 clients and 500 TB of monthly backup storage. Enhanced the existing backup/recovery procedures. Created a full range of documentation for backups thus closing existing audit points.

Senior UNIX Systems Administrator

  • Responsibilities included: Enterprise backup administrator, systems management administrator, departmental security administrator, general unix system administration, system builds, NAS filer administration, kernel/performance tuning, patch management.
  • Backup Migration - Designed the new backup environment for the NYSE development area. Migrated from an environment of two backup servers with local DLT auto-changers to a fibre channel attached STK Powderhorn Silo configuration of 9940B drives. Evaluated the Veritas NetBackup, EMC EDM and Legato Networker products. Legato Networker 7.2 chosen for an environment of 250 clients. Increased system throughput by 45 while lowering overall costs by 10 for a data center with 18TB of monthly backup storage. Created and managed backup/recovery procedures. Platforms of clients included UNIX, NT, Linux and NetApp/Celerra NDMP . Managed the migration for NYSE production systems to an EMC Clariion Cx500 disk backup solution with staging to an STK Powderhorn Silo.
  • Systems Management - Designed, installed and implemented HP IT/Operations for the development environment of 250 UNIX servers and 50 NT servers starting with version 5.0 and continuing through version 8.x. Duties include installation of management server, node agents, creation and distribution of templates and monitors, troubleshooting, Oracle database tuning/modification and day to day administration.
  • Mini-Cap project Produced a simulated production environment for development testing. Environment consisted of secure networks for financial member firms to reach NYSE systems through a dedicated direct high speed connection. Installed and configured six firewall servers Checkpoint and Gauntlet , created DNS and NIS domains, designed network layout and routing. Performed firewall and network management for the environment during the project's two-year existence.

Mechanical Engineer

  • Performed structural analysis of submarines using finite element analysis under various explosion and shockwave scenarios. Built frame models using the CAD package Patran and other in-house proprietary code on SGI IRIX systems, analysis performed on CRAY supercomputers.
