Network Architect/ Network Engineer

  • Each site of the 21 sites will have specific business requirements for each purpose of the Lenovo's X86 product line.
  • Most Lenovo site receives two circuits. One for a private MPLS network and another for standard internet traffic. For sites that are very small in size the will only receive an internet circuit with a VPN connection back to the Raleigh headquarters.
  • Based upon the specific needs of the business a selection of network equipment is selected and purchased through DIDATA. These devices range from 2960X to 4500X and 4506 chasis switches. Also because this business unit was derived from IBM X86 buisness, Lenovo were given over 1200 BNT switches as well as edge devices for lab network support employees that are managed by the network infrastructure department. Lenovo also used many Juniper switches that were replaced by Juniper for ease of management purposes. Management of all network devices once online will be done by a Cisco Prime Server. Our ticketing systems is called Bugzila were all network support cases will be tracked and and handled by the network infrastructure team.
  • Each site will use a Linux based DHCP and DNS server that is steadily connected to a main DHCP server in Raleigh. The grammatical user interface was create by IBM/Lenovo program development team which is Lenovo proprietary call SLRC for IP management, where in users in the lab networks will request IP's based on job duties and will be leased that address for the remainder of each business need and then SLRC will then strip users of their IP's and place these IP's bac into each DHCP pool.
  • Every site will use Palo Alto firewall which is configured to handle all site to site VPN and routing.
  • The Lenovo network infrastructure team also created a private sharepoint wherein all documentation like templates, site diagrams/VISEO site contact information, ad project information is kept.
  • All Lenovo sites in Europe, Australia, Tawain, Canada, China, and India, and U.S. operates under the same process in regards network operability.

Network Devices

  • Switches/switch stack 2960x, 3750X, 4500X, 4506E chasis series switches, BNT 8052, BNT 8024, and BNT 8056 series switches.
  • Routers ASR 1006
  • Linux Based DHCP server and DNS services.

Junior Network Architect/ Network Engineer

  • A network will perform a physical and a logical discovery of all network equipment and key devices on the network
  • Every site with a customer service department will require an mpls circuit used for voice connectivity. Teleflex will use a Cisco LAN router for connectivity. These LAN router are 1921, and 1941 Cisco LAN routers, that are used to replace all Cisco 2811 LAn routers. All MPLS Circuits are to be configure with BGP which will connect to Telflex Data center. Each BGP circuit will redistribute OSPF and advertise a /20 for data center connectivity.
  • Next the Engineer determines what devices should be replaced, upgraded or if a full upgraded is needed based on Teleflex standards. If a full upgrade is performed Teleflex standards are to implement 3750x catalyst switches, to replace all 3750v2 or older core switches previously commissioned. If a site has over 200 employees a 3750x stack is considered. For corporate offices in each country Teleflex will implement 4500 series 6500 series for core connectivity. Each Data center is implemted with a Cisco 6500 plde switch or Nexus 7k. If a site is currently using a 3750s model switches, Teleflex engineers are to update smartnet for further coverage.
  • For Access layer devices Teleflex Standards are to replace all 2950 series, foundry, netgear, etc devices with 2960x model switches. These can be switch stacks which provide additional ports based on user requirements. If a site has implemented a 2960s which is still covered on smartnet then device will remain in place until end of life is reached.
  • Next based on MDF, and IDF devices the network engineer will determine the power supply for each Rack. Teleflex standards are to use APC UPS for standard IDF connections and an Eaton 3000 UPS for MDF connections.
  • Each site has wireless requirements in which the engineer will determine the coverage needed to accompany a Teleflex facility. Any site with 10 or more access points will require a Virtual Wireless LAN Controller configure on a windows ESX server. All other site with 9 or less Access Points will connect to A data center controller with a 100 adder license to support multiple sites. The current Physical Wireless LAN controllers in place are Cisco 5508. Depending on where the AP's are place the Engineer is then required to determine if 2602i or 2602e models are needed in each location based on the facility CAD drawing. 2602i internal antenna , 2602e-external antenna .
  • Next is the Implementation phase. Once all equipment is purchased all device are shipped directly to the Teleflex Engineer where the Engineer is then responsible for all commissioning, decommissioning, change request and installation qualification processes that is needed to meet all documentation requirements.
  • Next all equipment is configured by the Engineer and is then sent to the specific sites. Mexico, Europe, Asia Pacific, Africa, Australia.
  • Finally all devices are bench tested and all post execution procedures are then followed.
  • Once the device is functional I will update our smartnet, Visio Diagrams and add them to our Nagios monitoring software where support will then maintainr.
  • After all is done the Engineer also has the job duties to help support our network Admins and/or Technicians with any network related issues that he/she cannot solve, which includes wireless, voice LAN and WAN infrastructure.
