Systems Administrator

Responsibilities:

  • Worked on the initial design setup and configuration of 48 X Cisco UCS B-Series Chassis blades used as ESXi hosts for a New VCenter build. Blades were zoned on 2 X Brocade DCX using Brocade Network advisor and storage allocated from Hitachi VSP’s. Template for RHEL7 was created and then about 150 VM’s were deployed using this template. Ansible was used to customize all the VM’s using vmware guest module.
  • Configured and installed 3 X HP C7000 with Virtual Connect modules. Blades were used for standalone hosts as well as VMWare. Zoning was done using Brocade Network Advisor and storage allocated from HP 3PAR SAN.
  • Configured and installed Hadoop cluster of 100 nodes using HP DL380 standalone servers, RHEL 7.4 was installed and storage from Netapp E5600 using SRP protocol over InfiniBand. Configured the nodes using Ansible.
  • Configured and installed 65 X Sun Netra X4-2 servers across Verizon’s regional offices to be used for speedtest by Ookla. These servers were setup to boot off a read-only usb drive containing customized RHEL6 and chroot for Ookla/http.
  • Built a 300 node Horton works Hadoop cluster HP DL380 Servers with local hard drives in 3 days using Kickstart from a RHEL satellite server and Ansible for further customizations.

Tech lead, Enterprise Engineering

Responsibilities:

  • Standardized different Linux variants to RHEL 5 and later upgraded to 6 and then 7.
  • Replaced local logins on Linux servers with the open source 389-ldap server pair in production. Tightened security by implementing password policy.
  • Reduced footprint of production datacenter by 70%. Optimized datacenter space usage by decommissioning old hardware/p2v required legacy vm’s. Started with 5% virtualization and ended with 95% virtualization. We were managing about 600 VM’s and 20 physical servers in addition to 30 ESXi hosts.
  • Automated DNS, radius and Apache web server sync using Puppet which eliminated human errors.
  • Implemented Docker containers for Elastic search on RHEL 7.
  • Migrated External DNS zones to Route 53 on Amazon AWS.
  • Setup POC Disaster Recovery Environment on AWS.
  • One of the critical steps for Site reliability is monitoring and fixing alerts, we accomplished that by working with different teams to collect various monitoring points and build a new Nagios monitoring to accomplish this. We also started a weekly oncall rotation between all of us, texts were sent out for any critical server/service down to the oncall Engineer.
  • Spear headed the complete overhaul of the virtualization environment, clean install of VCenter/ESXi 5.0 on Dell PowerEdge R820 servers using storage from VNX 5500 over Fabric using 2 X Cisco MDS Fabric switches. Nexus 1k was for networking. Later replaced the ESXi servers with Dell M1000E Chassis with M620 blades/Brocade M5424 Fabric switches/Force 10 MXL switches for networking.
  • Started with CVS and later updated to SVN and finally GIT.
  • Setup High Availability NFS cluster using RHEL clustering for all Production servers using 2 X Dell PowerEdge R820.
  • Standardized OS builds by developing documentation for server build process, included NMAP/Nessus scans on new hosts for security and hardening. Worked with different team to standardize backup policies.
  • Worked with marketing team to migrate corporate website to open source Drupal CMS using Nginx high performance web server for faster performance. eAccelerator was used for PHP caching. Akamai was used as a front-end for faster response times.
  • Administered Jira, Jenkins and confluence servers. Worked with Okta support for Single sign-on.
  • Reorganized the team to DevOps format where all the Engineers would manage Linux/Datacenter/VMware/Storage/Backup as our environment was stable and work reduced due to migration of Exchange to office365 and Virtualization. This was part of our goal to be cloud ready.
  • Independently moved Disaster Recovery Datacenter from Atlanta to Level3 co-location space at Dallas.
  • Implemented a new VMWare datacenter at the corporate office on Cisco UCS for back office servers like Active Directory, DHCP, DNS and Windows 7 workstations. 4 X Cisco UCS B200 M4 blades in Chassis 5108 and 2 X 6200 Fabric interconnects were used for the configuration.
  • Consolidated/offloaded all SSL s on the BIG-IP F5 pair. Moved all web applications to the F5 to simplify administration. Activated ASM module on F5 for additional security and DDoS protection.
  • Consolidated all windows CIFS shares running on different servers to EMC VNX 5500 data movers to ease administration, maintenance and reliability.
  • Moved the Org from traditional tape based backups to disk backups by making a case for EMC Avamar and Data Domain.
  • Change and incident management based on ITIL processes using Service-now, weekly review with Tech leads of different teams about planned changes, incident review and impact analysis. Worked within well-defined SLA’s for any changes.
  • Worked with Oracle professional services to install Exadata X5’s for consolidating all Oracle databases. 3 Exadata’s were installed, one each for Production/non-production/DR.
  • Worked with Middleware Ops team to setup Tomcat clustering servers and load balanced using Apache mod proxy ajp. Appdynamics in the cloud was used for Application performance monitoring.
  • Floated an idea along with power point presentation to our CIO to replace the expensive XO MPLS network with DIA circuits using DMVPN on Cisco ASR 1001-x as most of our user facing services was in the cloud. This would result in cost savings of a Million dollars/Year.
  • Lead the team as well as did the Project management to replace the aging 6509 core switch at our Production datacenter with the Nexus 5k pair. This resulted in faster performance and savings of about 15k in smartnet support.
  • Implemented Nexus 9k pair as core switches at the corporate office.
