Two month assignment as a summer intern with the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources Information Technology Services ITS Division, working with the GIS Coordinator to produce three new GIS datasets: Facilities requiring environmental Health Inspections, Underground Storage Tanks, and Permitted Groundwater Well Locations. The majority of the work consisted of geocoding tabular databases tables MS Access, Oracle containing facility information with physical address locations to derive latitude/longitude locations for the database records. This work included manipulating and cleansing the source data tables in Microsoft Access with a variety of SQL query techniques, using Internet searches to verify and/or correct addresses, and learning ESRI's ArcGIS desktop GIS software to perform geocoding. ArcGIS software was primarily used with the NC DOT street centerline GIS layer to geocode the facility addresses. Other tools used to geocode the Remaining addresses included ESRI's ArcWeb Services and the Yahoo Geocoding API. The second major task of the internship was to write and validate metadata for the three GIS layers that complies with the Federal Geographic Data Committee's FGDC Content Standard for Digitial Geospatial Metadata CSDGM .
