- My position as a contract employee included design and evaluating the storage array networks to consolidation SAN assets and evaluate better ways to leverage the SAN infrastructure in place. I designed several of the internal Delphi SAN environments to fulfill growth, capacity, and performance needs within the cost model. I included detailed architectural documents, detailed Visio diagrams and functional implementation guides. I consulted on a major Virtualization environment design, which included both hardware / OS and storage to fulfill the need to reduce server footprint. This role had many challenges including cost impacts, and ways to use local storage as an asset rather than SAN assets to fulfill the client's needs. This needed out of the box thinking to create a backup solution that would fulfill the major storage requirements, while keeping the costs down. This role included starting a project to get all storage assets billable using HP Storage Essentials to fulfill an HP requirement of billing by storage used.
- My other daily responsibilities included zoning and configuration of global Brocade fiber channel switches, presenting storage from HP XP, HP EVA, and EMC storage arrays, and working with offshore teams to fix daily operational issues.
Key Projects and Achievements at HP:
- HP Storage Essentials - Executed the architecture planning and pilot for a project that implemented the HP Storage Essentials software suite to a major automotive supplier. Storage Essentials has enabled HP to bill storage accurately by type of storage, array, and location. Storage Essentials has enabled HP to create custom up to date reports on the growth, allocation and forecast of storage and server usage. This project was very challenging in nature, due to the complex non-standard environment that the tool was deployed in. Many of these challenges included: operating system issues, firewalls, security, network, and software incompatibilities. Due to the nature of the clients history, we encountered systems that were over 10 years old, and still operating, yet the subject matter experts of those systems were no longer with the company.
- ILM - Information Life Cycle Management - Assisted the customer in starting an ILM framework to better control costs, compliance, and data retention. The initial framework included a Tiered Storage architecture. The architecture would migrate the data as it ages per policy set by the customers individual business unit requirements. As the data ages per established rules, the data would be migrated to lower cost storage media. For example a top tier 1 high availability HP XP array would be used as the top tier. As the data traversed an agreed to timeframe the data would be automatically migrated to an HP EVA array for online availability but lower cost and performance. The final tiers would have included a VTL Virtual Tape Library , onsite LTO tape storage, and finally an offsite storage of those LTO archived tapes.
- SQL consolidation architecture proposal - Working with a 3rd party vendor Scalability Experts I assisted the team on creating a business case for SQL server consolidation which the customer had seen as a potential cost savings. Working with the 3rd party vendor we evaluated server performance, location, customer use, and many other metrics to determine the best solution for consolidation for the customer. This project required hands on knowledge of not only the applications but customer objectives and cost models.
- Storage Site Solution Architectures - Developed a standardized storage architecture design to fit into a four tier model. The four architectures were solutioned via the following factors: Storage footprint, performance, growth, company direction, and data retention requirements. Each individual solution included a detailed configuration, BoM bill of materials , architecture, and growth estimation. This architecture would allow HP to standardize a storage solution and reduce cost to both HP and the customer. This architecture has been used a blue-print to establish a direction for the account going forward.
- Mexico Storage Analysis - During this engagement I was asked to troubleshoot issues with SAN performance. During my analysis with assistance from HP support and onsite personnel we were able to determine that the storage array was incorrectly provisioned to support the load the customer had recently introduced to the application. This solution required a major re-architecture to the current platform that required a lot of out of the box thinking to get the issue corrected.
- Transformation Architecture - The client is in the process of a major transformation of over 2,000 servers including Wintel, Linux, Sun, HP-UX and many other platforms to new supportable hardware platforms. As part of my role as an architect I was responsible for determining if a server should be virtualized or a standard alone server should be used to host the existing application. Many challenges involved these assessments, including end of life software, network and site constraints, customer requirement changes, and SLA impacts. I produced estimates, BoM bill of materials , and architecture documentation to support the transformation program.
