UNIX Engineer Contract
- Provided administrative and engineering support for HP-UX servers hosting SAP software: resolved production issues, planned and implemented system upgrades, documented configurations, maintained system security and provided third level support for user issues.
- Architected and implemented systems for Rapid Outage Alleviation and Restoration project. Primary target hardware was RX8640 servers partitioned into VPARS. Setup HP-UX 11i v3 on new servers.
- Created Disaster recovery procedures for all UNIX ERP servers led team effort to evaluate, test and improve these procedures.
- Wrote Perl and Korn shell scripts to automate administrative functions and retrieve information about servers, users, groups, ports, and printers.
- Participated in root cause analysis efforts to prevent recurrences of outages.
Independent Consultant

- Repaired computer hardware, performed OS updates, resolved problems for individual customers and businesses with Windows PCs and Servers.
- Secured wireless networks for home and small office networks.
- Consulted with Radio Bible Class to update enterprise backup environment and add Macintosh computers into enterprise backup environment.

Unix/Storage Administrator
- Architected and implemented installation and configuration of new servers and replacement servers.
- Piloted the use of Linux in production environment. Assisted in moving Lotus Notes, and card key production systems unto Linux servers.
- Introduced the use of PERL as a system administration tool. Developed training materials and taught a course to UNIX and Windows system administrators introducing them to the PERL programming language.
- Developed security protocols appropriate to server's environment. Implemented fixes to issues found by security audits. Developed process for hardening servers exposed to Internet. Documented process so that it could be used as standard procedure for preparing UNIX servers placed in DMZ.
- Created scripts to gather data for trend analysis to proactively prevent problems with production environment. Wrote scripts to perform routine server administration tasks. Examples are adding users, trimming logs, removing temp files.
- Audited support contracts on an annual basis. By dropping equipment that was no longer in use and adjusting service levels reduced support contract costs more than 50k annually.
- Took apart and rebuilt Netbackup master and media servers to resolve persistent backup problems. Identified several configuration and system architecture issues that had been preventing system from operating reliably. Later re-architected Netbackup environment consolidating Windows and UNIX backups to same SAN with one master server. Eliminating redundant master servers, reducing support costs and system complexity. Later added support for NDMP protocol so that NAS devices could be backed by existing media servers.
- Created and implemented plan to consolidate two ATL's with 16 tape drives, down to one ATL with 12 drives. Reducing support costs and allowing surplus equipment to be sold.
- Wrote Perl script to identify backup jobs that failed in the previous 24 hours and send a notification to Netbackup administrators. Added functionality to read error logs and report on problems with media and backup hardware. Reports produced by this script satisfied SOX auditors that nightly backups were being run, and monitored for success.
- Researched VTL's for use as disk based storage for backups. Implemented EMC CDL700 to replace tape as primary storage media. To increase capacity later upgraded to EMC EDL4200.
- Configured and zoned switches for SAN access to tape and VTL devices.
- Planned and managed updates of Netbackup from 3.2 through 6.5. Performed all upgrades without requiring support from outside vendors. All updates went smoothly.
- Added clustering for master Backup server to prevent single point of failure from halting nightly backups.
- Evaluated RMAN as an alternative to BCV's for backup of Oracle databases. Working with DBA's was able to show RMAN worked reliably and would result in significant long term cost savings.
- Created a road map for future upgrades to backup environment.
- Spearheaded effort to standardize and automate disaster recovery procedures for UNIX servers and Netbackup. Wrote PERL script to automate setting up Netbackup servers and to restore Netbackup catalog.
- Created jumpstart and ignite scripts to restore critical servers from backup images.
- Member of 24x7 on-call team. Responded to alerts generated by Open view system monitors. Assisted help desk in resolving user complaints.

Server Software Specialist
- Technical lead for Sun Solaris servers. Resolved reliability problems with servers by replacing GBICs, swapping out CPU's with memory cache issues and instituting a regular patching schedule.
- Setup Big Brother, an open source monitoring tool, to automatically notify on call administrator of problems with UNIX servers.
- Wrote shell scripts to perform regular maintenance tasks, such as removing temp files, monitoring and pruning log files, and reporting on disk space usage freeing up administrator time for more value added tasks.
- Worked with DBA's on creating data dumps from Sybase databases. Created scripts to run ufsdump on Solaris servers for nightly backups of Sybase Database. Implemented tape rotation scheme.
- Made changes to Sun support contract that resulted in 10 annual savings. Allowed servers to be added and dropped without penalty.
