DevOps Engineer

Responsibilities:

  • Optimized operations situational awareness by binding to Compass MySQL server as a replication slave utilizing python-mysql-replication library. Captured data points with minimal impact to MySQL server, evaluated the data, transformed that data to InfluxDB series data, utilized RabbitMQ as a transport mechanism, and coded a consumer from RabbitMQ to insert the data points into InfluxDB. This resulted in merely 250ms of overhead from the time that a point was recorded into Compass MySQL to the time that it was inserted into InfluxDB for display in Grafana or Perisope.
  • System is both vertically and horizontally scalable and can be used to integrate numerous data sources to populate influxDB and/or other databases such as Elastic Search, etc.
  • System is multiprocessing / multithreaded such that a single instance may send it’s data points gathered to multiple destinations. Performance is greater than 30,000 points per second.
  • This same technique is currently being adapted to Science Logic EM7 to consolidate our time series data points into a single pane of glass which does not suffer from the scalability limitations imposed by traditional SQL data stores.

This system also has the ability to perform network troubleshooting in that it will record all traffic across the circuit being monitored in full duplex and can export selected streams to a PCAP file for analysis with external tools such as Wireshark.

  • Wrote various portions of a point of sale system known as VARDIS on QANTEL systems for clients such as Rosa’s Superstore utilizing QANTEL QIC-Basic.
