Web Developer / Systems Analyst II Primary responsibilities were to continue and expand upon all functions I performed while at University of Pittsburgh including:
- Support, maintain and develop public portals for the School of Medicine and various organizations affiliated with UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh. This required working with legacy technologies and techniques including table-based layouts, nested navigation DHTML, rollovers, image maps, and Flash animations. Several sites were built and hosted commercially and required administration of the server as well as responsibility for the hosting accounts. Web site support required regularly-scheduled photographic sessions to update and on-board personnel. Video production, editing, and distribution was a frequently requirement.
- Design and Develop new sites or sub-sites using primarily ASP.NET web forms, SQL Server, and/or Classic ASP. Backward compatibility with Internet Explorer version 6 was the primary consideration when designing any new site until 2009 when this requirement was eased. As the requirement to build for IE6 ended, focus shifted to building sites that could employ modern capabilities. The new benchmark became IE8 which still imposed constraints but it began to be possible to design and develop using HTML5, CSS3, jQuery and Javascript as well as numerous frameworks, plug-ins and utilities. Photoshop and Illustrator were still used for preparing web graphics and creating wireframes but Flash was abandoned in favor of newer animation options. Dreamweaver became less important as the pace of technology outstripped its abilities. Designing in-the-browser became the new paradigm and as new projects were undertaken, the main focus shifted to providing the client with the best user experience that could be delivered while still ensuring graceful degradation in Internet Explorer 8.
