Senior Systems Engineer

I have worked at Darden IT since June of 2000. During my career at Darden I have worked on a large number of projects and utilized a vast number of technologies in delivering solutions for those projects. My role on all of the projects was technical design and development lead. I am considered a valuable knowledge resource at Darden because of my lengthy portfolio of project membership, and I am a respected veteran technical team member. During my first year working at Darden I was promoted to Senior System Engineer SSE making me the third SSE at the company of over forty developers at the time.

Management System

This was the first web application Darden built, and I was hired in June 2000 to design, architect, and help develop the application. LMS is used to schedule restaurant staff based upon dozens of labor and business rules. Following rollout, I helped support LMS and extend its functionality for a few years. The technologies the LMS development team of about fifteen developers used in the application implementation include classic ASP pages with SQL Server 7 backend eventually migrated to SQL Server 2000, 2005, and currently 2008 R2 , JavaScript, complex stored procedures, several VB 6 COM DLLs, on an N-tier architecture. I helped build several VB 6 EXEs and COM DLLs polling processes for data import / export to feed and consumer systems like our point of sale system, PeopleSoft, and business intelligence BI data warehouse. I also built dozens of DTS packages on the SQL Server backend to assist in the polling processes. Prior to rollout of this application, I conducted load and performance testing using Mercury Loadrunner. Several key capacity optimizations came about as the result of my load test and performance findings. LMS is still being used to this day at Darden. The CIO at Darden once referred to me as the 'Father of LMS'. I received many awards for my participation on the LMS project. In fact, I was initially hired at Darden as a Senior Programmer Analyst but within a year was promoted to Senior Systems Engineer mostly because of my expertise and efforts on the LMS project.

I helped a team of seven developers some of which were on the LMS project above build interfaces in DiSH so restaurant staff can view their individual schedules, employees can request time off, and managers can approve time off. The interfaces I built used classic ASP, JavaScript, and the LMS SQL Server backend from above as well as a DiSH SQL Server backend. The interfaces also used complex stored procedures and DTS packages.

KDS is the routing system for meals as they are cooked in the restaurant kitchens. The system has custom keyboards and monitors where kitchen staff can time meal preparation based upon pre-defined cook times and station routing configurations 'bumping' the meal components through the kitchen from KDS terminal to KDS terminal. My role on the KDS project was to work with our Darden menu systems and culinary teams to configure this cook time and routing information and feed it to KDS. I built an ASP.Net web forms front end for business teams to use for entering configuration information. The technologies I utilized to implement this solution included the .Net 2.0 / 3.0 Framework, C , ASP.Net, JavaScript, ADO.Net, SQL Server 2000. .Net solutions were new to Darden at the time I worked on the KDS team. I was one of only a few developers at Darden who knew .Net at the time, so I worked mostly solo on the configuration front end side of the KDS project as a team of one developer. This project is where I honed my .Net skills and found my love for the platform and framework.

Par Pull is a supply chain system application used by the culinary and menu systems teams as well as restaurant managers to replenish and forecast inventory needs. My role on this project was to help a team of five developers upgrade the classic ASP / SQL Server 2000 version of Par Pull to .Net and an Oracle backend. The technologies we used included the .Net 3.5 Framework, C , ASP.Net, ADO.Net, JavaScript / JQuery, and Oracle 10.2. The development team had to rewrite about one hundred SQL Server stored procedures into Oracle procedures as well as re-write classic ASP pages into ASP.Net. We used ADO.Net to call the Oracle procedures. This application was architected on an MVC pattern. My load testing experience was also valuable on this project and was used prior to rollout to boost capacity and performance optimization. I still support this application today in a limited role.

iShift is an employee shift-swapping application where restaurant staff can offer trades for shifts, pickup other staff shifts, or drop shifts. iShift was the first .Net web application built at Darden from the ground up new . The technologies the development team of five developers used included the .Net 4.0 Framework, C , ASP.Net web forms, JavaScript/JQuery, Oracle 11G and SQL Server 2005 back ends, Entity Framework and Lightspeed Oracle ORM , and LINQ to SQL. This was the first web application at Darden where ORM was used as well as LINQ. This application was also architected on an MVC pattern. We abstracted most of the logic out of the aspx code behind into the controller layer thereby making unit testing more agnostic. My load testing experience was also valuable on this project and was used prior to rollout to boost capacity and performance optimization. I still support this application today in a limited role.

Manager

MS is a manager scheduling web application where directors and general managers can build schedules much like LMS but limited to managers. The technologies the development team of three developers used included the .Net 4.0 Framework, C , ASP.Net web forms, JavaScript/ JQuery, SQL Server 2008 backend, Entity Framework, and LINQ to SQL. This application was also architected on an MVC pattern. We abstracted most of the logic out of the aspx code behind into the controller layer thereby making unit testing more agnostic. I still support this application today in a limited role.
