PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

Sr Load and Perf Engineer, AWS Cloud Systems / Operations Engineer

Responsibilities:

  • Worked as part of an Ops team that was responsible for the migration and creation / build out of all Humanify infrastructure from our Peak data center to the AWS cloud.
  • Infrastructure spanned multiple regions and AZs and consisted of approximately 290 server instances running primarily CentOS 7 / Java / Jetty stack with some Windows Server 2012 IIS / SQL Server 2014 instances as well and a few NoSQL Mongo database instances. All instances were behind AWS ELBs and / or NGINX proxies.
  • Responsible for monitoring / management of infrastructure via AWS Console, Zabbix monitoring, Graylog, Ansible
  • Responsible for testing and identifying load and performance issues for InterApp / Humanify web and mobile chat and voice solution.
  • Responsible for creating, implementing and maintaining a Dokuwiki knowledge base wiki for our Ops team
  • Designed, built, and implemented cloud based, distributed load test platforms in both AWS EC2 as well as Azure consisting of forty JMeter instances (8 Masters, 32 Slaves) utilizing the AWS CLI along with BASH and PowerShell to script the startup / shutdown of the servers as well as to configure the JMeter distributed testing framework (e.g., script accessed Slave ip addresses and wrote them to the appropriate JMeter properties files on each of the Master servers.) Later, Jmeter was replaced with homebuilt node.js tools running on CentOS 7 m4.xlarge instances. Also made wide use of Artillery (open source node.js tool) for restful API testing.
  • Created custom RDP dashboards using RDP Configuration Manager for working with the AWS and Azure Windows instances as well as our internal Dev, Test and Prod servers (this was for both the Windows load platform as well as some of our server infrastructure); this greatly simplified the management, viewing and ease of switching between the AWS Windows instances as well as our internal servers while running tests and monitoring / gathering performance data.
  • Installed and configured custom PerfMon templates specifically tailored for our IIS servers as well as our SqlSvr2014 Servers in order to fully leverage the capabilities of PAL (Performance Analysis of Logs - Microsoft internal tool) for log analysis of our performance data.
  • Installed and configured custom Failed Request Event Buffering (FREB) solution for performing event traces on our IIS servers (allows us to conduct very granular inspection of request data generated by our application / flowing through our webservers)
  • Built custom trace templates for SQL Server Profiler for analyzing RPC calls and Stored Procedure performance when running either aggregate load tests or when conducting single device traces; data is saved to custom trace tables created in my own “Load and Performance” database instance using SQL Server 2014; this approach allows performance data to be maintained much more easily for comparison over time and aids in regression analysis.
