Business Intelligence Philosophy

  • Data Warehousing is a tool that performs 3 main functions: Integration, Enhancement and Presentation of data. Data Warehousing is NOT a requirement for Business Intelligence.
  • Strong believer in many of Ralph Kimball's philosophies like strong dimensional model for reporting and deriving business value as soon as possible out of a data warehouse. I honor his codification of the star schema and snowflake data structures, his work that defined the concepts of data marts, dimensional hierarchies, base and aggregate metrics, drilling, etc. However, I find that blind adherence to Kimball's philosophies inevitably leads to stovepipe systems and a lack of an integrated view of data across the enterprise.
  • Bill Inmon has been a superb communicator since the early 1990s on issues around designing, building, implementing and managing the data warehouse environment. I also like his holistic approach to data warehouses and the business environment as displayed in his ideas of the Information Factory. However, Inmon's philosophies seem to lead to projects that are too big in scope and never complete.
  • Therefore a middle ground is more appropriate, with a focus on Single Version of the Truth and speed to market e.g.: a POC can be achieved with EII technologies, then slowly replaced with EDW and DM's over time.
  • Firm believer in having a strong MDM infrastructure of reference information with deference to time, effective-from and effective-to dates for each value, or 6th normal form , organized in a snowflake pattern. Then flattened, conformed, Slowly Changing Dimensions can be added as views on top of the snowflakes with minimal effort.
  • Technology agnosticsince implementations have included Oracle, SQL Server, Teradata, DB2, Informix, MySQL, and even flat files. Worked with Informatica, Sunopsis, DataStage and 3 other ETL programs worked with MicroStrategy, Business Objects, Cognos and 4 other reporting, OLAP and data visualization tools. Used SAS, SPSS, Neural Networks, and 5 other data mining tools. Ultimately, a holistic design, an emphasis on quality, and a good plan of attack are the real keys to success of the infrastructure build.
  • Team leadership is the real key to success: a 5 year plan is defined, program sponsorship is sought and secured, resource needs are identified and availability is determined, projects are identified prioritized broken down into tasks, time estimates milestones deadlines are determined, tasks are assigned to resources, daily task lists for each resource are generated, problems are mitigated, status is periodically taken and communicated. Everyone is held accountable for their deadlines and agreements.

Visionary and Teaching Skills

Knowledge Management leads to Learning Management and Regulatory Compliance/Compliance
  • Collaboration/Collaboration platform program that gets different areas both inside and outside the business to work together through Data sharing and Electronic Data Interchange.
