Qualifications

Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence Design and Architecture for organizations ranging from large industrial manufacturing company to a private, non-profit, to state government agencies, to a small, private, on-line retailer. During this time I have been the technical lead for all aspects of the data warehouse, from understanding the needs of the business through data acquisition, ETL, and business presentation.

Professional philosophy

  • We live in an extraordinary time for data warehousing. While data acquisition and warehouse design are still crucial, BI is moving in multiple, sometimes contradictory, directions. On the one hand data presentation specialists like Edward Tufte and Stephen Few are pioneering new ways of making reporting more usable from one class of end user. On the other hand machine learning, Hadoop, and the big data revolution are pushing Business Intelligence in another exciting direction for different classes of users. All of this puts new pressure on the old ways of doing things.
  • A data warehouse cannot be a data heap, and business intelligence isn't a long list of static reports punctuated with a pie chart or a line graph. Modern computing power gives organizations unimaginable potential for the creative use of data. All too often business users are reluctant to even touch an OLAP cube, much less perform significant data mining. By using the array of sophisticated tools now available, the Business Intelligence team can help drive the business in ways unimaginable in previous generations.

Technical experience

  • experience conceiving, designing, and developing applications and business intelligence solutions, including data architecture, processing techniques, and tool usage.
  • data warehouse architect for five Oracle based data warehouses, which provided reporting and analysis services for over 1000 users.
  • experience as head data warehouse architect and database administrator in a mixed PostgreSQL, Infobright, and SQL Server environment.
  • experience with multiple reporting and ETL technologies including Oracle Warehouse Builder, Microsoft SSIS/SSAS/SSRS, Informatica, Business Objects, Pentaho and hand created ETL frameworks .
  • Managed and mentored team of data warehouse developers and DBA's.
  • 10 years experience consulting on strategic and technical aspects of business intelligence systems, including information usage, tool analysis and recommendations, design of system performance measures, etc.
  • working with business users to align IT with business needs and set business expectations.
  • data modeling experience, using tools such as Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler and ERWin..
  • Expert at writing and tuning massive SQL queries, and PL/SQL and plpgsql procedures/functions.
  • Specialist in large query design and tuning and efficient ETL design.
  • Expert in database design focusing on proper normalization procedures, application design scalability, and data maintainability.
  • of experience as an application database administrator and data architect.

Administrator

Confidential has outsourced most of its database management to teams in Confidential, but some of its systems contain export controlled data the management of which cannot legally be outsourced to non-Confidential. While attending graduate school I worked as a contractor on the three-man team that maintained the Oracle databases that underlie those systems.

  • Primary responsibilities: The maintenance of several Oracle 10g databases housing home grown applications which contain export controlled data.
  • Provide technical advice to developers regarding proper interaction with an Oracle-based application database.
  • Accomplishments: Provision of success maintenance, including periodic database upgrades and application performance troubleshooting while studying for a Masters in Information Technologies from the Claremont Graduate University.
  • Provided the key design analysis which allowed developers to fix a particularly vexing performance problem.

Confidential

  • Confidential is the .. responsible for regulating local governmental and private organizations that aid distressed families and children. The OCFS Data Warehouse provides reporting services for Agency managers to help guide the deployment and manage the effectiveness of case workers.
  • The OCFS data warehouse team was staffed heavily with people I had already worked with and mentored at GE Power Systems, primarily using the approach that we had developed at GEPS. By the time I joined the team the data warehouse was already operating. I worked more as a technical guru helping out tricky design and performance problems, as well as designing the mechanism used to expunge some data which legally we could not keep after a certain amount of time while maintaining some general information about the records to be used for aggregative analysis.

Primary responsibilities: The provision of technical guidance on the design of the OCFS data warehouse, and special projects.

  • Accomplishments: Mentored a staff of 5 ETL developers on best practices for designing efficient data movement mechanism using Oracle Warehouse Builder.
  • Developed ETL techniques that solve particular performance issues with our ETL design, which cut down some long running processes from 60 minutes of 5 or so minutes.
  • The creation of a system to satisfy legal requirements to purge identifying data from data warehouse structures that aren't ordinarily changed. This involved the development of new techniques for identifying rows to be updated, labeling the data as having been purged, and ensuring that nothing remains in the system.

  • In 2005 we started designing a developing a small Data Warehouse with the primary goal of marrying animal disease test results with the farms under Ag Markets jurisdiction, with identification and prediction of disease outbreaks in mind. Unfortunately, the outside system responsible for getting us the test results was very late in development, and the basic purpose of the Data Warehouse was never met, although several smaller subpurposes e.g. reporting on the effectiveness of agency vets in the field were .
  • Primary Responsibilities: Design and build a data warehousing environment to support Ag Market's need to analyze animal test results compared with cattle herd information, as well as provide an analysis platform for veterinary screening information.
  • Accomplishments: Designed and built the systems surrounding the data capture from four systems into a centralized data warehouse, and onto a small series of data marts.
  • Provided analytical reporting environment allowing the agency to marry the results of veterinary tests to farms to help the agency predict and respond to disease outbreaks, provide advice to participating farms, manage agency vet scheduling information.

  • Confidential is a venerable charity that provides adoption services, helps match children with foster families, and runs group homes for the developmentally disabled.
  • In 2003 the CEO of NYFH brought us in to build a Data Warehousing environment to help the organization ask questions they never would have thought to ask with the older system, which we served by integrating data from at least 10 different systems, ranging from their then 20 year old mainframe system to a modern, SQL Server based HR system to a hand created internal system to several Excel spreadsheet based feeds.
  • Over the years they have expanded the system to include an Operational Data Store built from data fed on a daily basis from OCFS.
  • Primary Responsibilities: Design and build with one other person a data warehouse to support analytical reporting related to the management of children in foster care, young adults in supervised group homes, and children in the adoption process. The data warehouse mostly serves as a separate reporting environment from their 30 year old mainframe operations system, which is not designed for creative analysis, but it also includes data integrated from multiple other sources, including an operational data store fed from the Office of Child and Family Services.
  • Maintain a small OLTP database and system to track child incidents and foster child intake.
  • Accomplishments: Built an Oracle Warehouse Builder based ETL system integrating 6 systems into a 100g data warehouse used to support child placement analysis, payroll processing, and human resources planning.
  • Taught the client how to develop Oracle Discoverer based reporting environment.
