At Midwest Consulting Group, assigned to Confidential, I worked with a team of 5 programmers to design, code and maintain a brand new airline passenger system that had to be in place in 90 days or the airline would lose a large sum of money in fines. The first phase of the system required only getting the Batch portion of the system up and running. This involved over 15 new programs and interfacing with 5 existing systems to make sure none of the new data coming in was lost. I worked 200 hours of overtime in this time period and had testing completed 1 week ahead of schedule. The first tickets were sold 3 weeks after implementation and processed without a hitch. I then designed the Online portion of the system and assisted in the coding of it. I also developed an adhoc reporting system for senior management in the Marketing Department that was used for system tracking. I managed a team of 5 people of which 2 were contract programmers.

I was then involved in monitoring the installation of 5 OTC’s (Operating Telephone Companies) and heading up training for over 50 clients on how to use the new E&E process of the new MPS system. I was now managing a team of nine programmers, contractors, and analysts. The development environment consisted of COBOL, IMS and DB2 on MVS/ESA.

At Universal Underwriters I spent the first 6 weeks in a training program to learn the basic operation of the company. During this time I made changes to JCL, made modifications to existing programs, and learned TSO/ISPF. For the next 3 months I was involved in the design of an Online incentive system to eliminate the current Batch system. I did both the functional and technical design. This also involved making out time schedules and defining resources needed to complete the project. I then wrote all the technical specifications for both the Online and Batch programs. I was then given 3 people to work on the Online programs and 2 juniors to work on the Batch programs. During the coding phase I kept track of our progress and coded one of the Online programs myself. We then tested and installed the system 2 weeks ahead of the original schedule. The development environment consisted of COBOL, DB2 on MVS/ESA and VSAM.

Project/Analyst
9/86-2/89

At Confidential I entered in the Corporate Management Associate (CMA) training program. Candidates spend 6 months rotating from department to department learning the "big picture" about how the company works. I was the first CMA brought in specifically for the MIS department and spent time in each area assessing their mainframe systems and improving their PC systems. I was involved in the following tasks:

  • Financial Services: I wrote an Online reporting system for their PC based Month End Balancing System; what took 4 people 5 hours each to do manually, now takes 15 minutes.
  • Logistics: Demonstrated how to download a report data set from the mainframe and developed a spreadsheet used for further analysis of the data.
  • Planning and Forecasting: Helped develop the sales plan for the next year.
  • Real Estate: Trained their clerks on how to use WordStar 4 and Easyflow. Worked with their CAD/CAM system for making blueprints and store layouts.
  • Merchandising: Developed a software package in Pascal that enabled a merchandiser to select the proper case size run to send to a particular store due to its sales curve. This saved 50 merchandisers 5 hours. A week and led to the development of the Sizebuyer position. This later led to a mainframe system called Casegoods Substitution.
  • Also, during this time I learned COBOL, ROSCOE, DATADICTIONARY, DATACOM/DB, QUICKJOB, and many IBM utilities. I changed 4 programs and wrote 2 programs from scratch for the new Merchandiser Security System.
  • Store Trip: For two weeks I visited 5 different stores and evaluated them from a MIS standpoint. After returning, I wrote a 5-page paper on my evaluation and gave a 50-minute presentation to the senior management of MIS.
  • Invoicing: Totally changed the layout and method of distribution of invoicing. Created a new paper form and a fiche slide. When completed 9 positions were eliminated and 22 filing cabinets an 8 shelves in the Warehouse were now available. I also gave them an added benefit of interfacing this system with the hangtags and gum labels. This gave them the ability to print the invoices, hangtags, and gum labels on a single store basis for up to 14 working days.
  • Picking Documents: Converted to a new software package and a new form.
  • 3090 Conversion: Worked on a departmental team responsible for setting up the move from a 3084 to a 3090. Went to weekly meetings and helped in coordinating testing from our areas perspective.
  • Spent my remaining time supporting various problems and enhancements that came up on the Warehouse System.

I then started documenting the old Warehouse System for the start of the rewrite. This involved 275 Procedures, 843 Programs and more than 3000 Datasets. All the documentation was put on PC's as opposed to the Mainframe. This involved teaching all the people involved in this project how to use many new software packages. During this time I worked with 2 other people in keeping the Warehouse System running. I personally worked on over 20 production problems during this time frame. Most of which were critical path.

I Worked on the Functional Design of Movement and Inventory Control. Designing screens and how they will operate. This was all done using Method/1 Documentation. Due to a shortage of technical people in our area, I remained on the pager (Chairman of the Pager Committee). Worked on several CICS program enhancements and the installation of the Distribution Control System (DCS). I helped in reviewing whether or not to purchase DCS package from Arthur Anderson. Worked on the Series/I in determining the changes that may need to be made to interface with the DCS package. I also learned how to program in EDL on the Series/1.

We'd love your feedback!
