PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Confidential

Senior DB2 Database Administrator

Responsibilities:

  • Focused on database performance by troubleshooting and resolving ill performing database code and processes by monitoring, analyzing and modifying sql/stored procedures/db structures and parameters, reducing batch run times by more than 90% and allowing a 5 fold increased in application throughput.
  • Trained application developers and DBAs in how to code and optimize complex sql and stored procedures.
  • Coded and optimized stored procedures for brokerage systems that perform overlay portfolio management including rebalancing accounts, placing trade orders and portfolio analysis for external clients, with financial data stored on 30 DB2 10.5 instances on Linux, AIX and Windows servers.
  • Designed, wrote and maintained the FDX Connect system to maintain trading models and push these directly to subscribed brokerage systems via federated database connections, as well as the functionality to create and modify trade orders, a core process of the brokerage systems.
  • Upgraded development and production databases from DB2 9.1 to 10.5 via a multistep process using a secondary server, since a simple upgrade was not possible given the number of versions being skipped. As part of this project the database parameters and structures were standardized to improve performance, reliability and maintainability.
  • Maintain multi terabyte shared and federated security price databases to be used by multiple brokerage systems.
  • Establish and maintain asynchronous HADR between production and DR instances.
  • Establish database encryption on a subset of the instances to satisfy client compliance requirements.
  • Support standard maintenance activities such as upgrades, backups, reorgs, runstats, and the installation of database fix packs.

Senior Database Administration Manager

Responsibilities:

  • Designed, implemented and maintained real time data replication and ETL processing from DB2 to Oracle, using multiple MQ and direct data streams to ensure throughput. Tuned the EDP replication configuration to handle very large units of work which increased the stability of the replication process. Created a monitoring/alerting process to ensure ETL SLAs are met. This resulted in the move of a significant portion of report and secondary operational processing from the mainframe to the lower cost mid-range environment.
  • Implemented and provided system support for a rapidly growing distributed and dynamic workload by configuring DB2 Connect clients and servers, adjusting DB2 subsystem and DB2 connect system parameters, helping to setup websphere pools, working with z/OS system programmers to adjust WLM settings, and setting up the governor to selectively limit cpu consumption. This enabled exponential distributed growth while ensuring production stability.
  • Led DB2 planning, testing and support for transfer of outsourced data center from ACS to EDS.
  • Collaborated with application developers and data modelers to perform design and SQL code reviews for DB2 applications ensuring the smooth implementation of scalable, well performing systems in production. Monitored existing static/dynamic production SQL for performance, resulting in new savings of $2M to $4M each year.
  • Implemented online reorgs and embedded image copy and statistics, reducing elapsed time by 70% and application systems availability by 90%.
  • Managed and coordinated activities between 4 DBAs and additional outsourced resources, maintaining project resource plans and adjusting staffing to meet project priorities. Trained IDMS DBAs, Oracle DBAs and other technical staff to work with DB2 z/OS.
  • Led DB2 v5, v7, v8 and v9 upgrades on multiple subsystems to take advantage of new release features as well as improve system performance and scalability.
  • Planned and implemented SMS conversion, which reduced the amount of DBA effort required to maintain production databases and reduced the number of outages by 10%.
  • Designed disaster recovery procedures for DB2 and for the ODS data propagation process to meet the recovery time frames defined by the business, and participated in disaster recovery exercises ensuring their successful completion.
  • Designed ACF2/DB2 security processes and standards to meet audit standards and prevent unauthorized access to DB2. Trained technical security staff in ACF2, security procedures and ACF2/DB2 interdependence.
  • 24x7 support for all DB2 system, DB2 application, replication, and DB2 Connect issues
  • Trained developers on coding efficient SQL, v8 features, DB2 program preparation and packages/plans/collections.
  • Supported the design, development and implementation of TAS, a system to cost terminal activities. Planned and scheduled all application and DBA activities ensuring the successful production implementation.
  • Supported the design, development and implementation of ACS123, a project with 19 databases and 400 tables being replicated to Oracle, which increased functionality and migrated all logistics activities from IDMS to DB2.
