PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

Confidential, Seattle, Washington

Senior Database Administrator

Responsibilities:

  • 11g physical database & RAC design; 32  64-bit RAC migrations; 11.2 upgrades & patching.
  • Converted 100+ GB tables to partitioned tables online with dbms redef and automated partition maintenance and its data archival.
  • Redesigned an oracle backup & recovery system: RMAN scripts housed & scheduled by Grid Control and redundant shell/RMAN scripts launched via DBMS SCHEDULER..
  • Built, configured, managed and patched ... Grid Control 10.2.0.5.
  • Redesigned and extensively simplified and improved an Oracle database clone/refresh procedure; Automated RMAN duplication & Data Pump dev/QA refresh ...
  • Improved the response time for database rebuild/refreshing. Both response time and delivery combined have improved from 1-2 weeks to 1-2 days on average. This is enabled by better & faster backup restore infrastructure, better database duplication tools, and improved preparation of archive log retention and backup availability on the dev/QA servers.
  • Implemented Flashback Database in production; for QA databases for substantially speeding up frequent data refresh.
  • Designed oracle replication using Streams & Basic Replication (materialized views).
  • I fixed a severe table space fragmentation problem in a production RAC database. The procedure was to rebuild or move all affected objects online to several new tablespaces.: I separated a ~1 TB size data file into multiple data files. This was a complex operation to do live with minimal application downtime. The result was improved efficiency and speed of backups but more importantly, it dramatically improves the recovery time in the event that is needed. An immediate goal and benefit was met: reducing a 2 TB database to 1 TB by removing severe fragmentation.
  • Leveraged Grid Control for multiple improvements is DBA services including;
  • Faster and less error-prone dev/QA database refreshes (DB duplications from prod)
  • Access to Grid Control for dev & QA people
  • Quicker responses & knowledge of errors & performance issues
  • Quicker and more efficient user account management
  • Expanded, upgraded, & improved dev/QA database server environments:
  • Built a test Oracle Grid Control server.
  • Provided, on demand, more database server capacity when needed development and testing.
  • Built many new additional dev & QA databases when needed.
  • Building a test RAC & Data Guard environment for a new set of applications.
  • Built an Oracle 11.2 development server with ~20 databases.
  • Provided Oracle Flashback Database service for the QA databases to improve refresh time by 2 orders of magnitude ... from a day or two  a few minutes.
  • I provided on-demand assistance with development and QA database performance issues and challenges. Help of this type is all over the map from reviewing code, offering alternative coding approaches, tracing & analyzing database calls, creating triggers & hints, adjusting oracle initialization parameters, providing more database resources, providing knowledge of oracle features and usage ...
  • I upgraded Oracle Grid Control to 10.2.0.5 (latest current release) to improve the backup, recovery, and 11g management. This provides much quicker diagnosis and repair of oracle database availability issues. A large part of this upgrade also included learning the new Grid Control tools and software to improve DBA efficiency.
