Responsibilities:

  • Research in Electro graining, anodizing, and coating techniques for offset printing plates.
  • Designed and built pilot substrate line consisting of chemical, mechanical, electrical, controls instrumentation, and environmental systems. Environmental systems consisted of pH control of effluents, and use of scrubbers for exhaust fume control.
  • Conducted research in continuous web coating systems on a pilot line consisting of smooth roller 2, 3, and 4 roller systems, gravure coating system, slot coating systems, use of open and enclosed doctor blade system.
  • Troubleshooting and maintenance of a continuous process line. This consisted of Confidential, drier tunnels, thermal oxidizer, DC drive system, pneumatic controls, air flows, explosion proof wiring systems and pumping systems
  • Assisted in research on electro graining, etching and anodizing systems.
  • I was part of a team to troubleshoot and commission new production lines in China and India.

Chief electrical power distribution, instrumentation and Controls Engineer

Confidential

Responsibilities:

  • Installed and programmed Confidential for automation of process line instrumentation and controls including ladder and logic diagrams.
  • Designed, installed and maintained in - plant electrical systems, consisting of continuous web drive systems with speed and tension controls, including load cells, continuous web coating systems, transformers, circuit breakers, rectifiers, motor control centers, hazardous location wiring, fire alarm systems, sequencing controls. Type of motors used consisted of AC, DC, Eddy Current and Servo for precision cut to length.
  • Process controls and instrumentation. This consisted of PID multi-loop microprocessor based temperature controllers, pH, level, flow, specific gravity, pressure and conductivity.
  • Environmental: Scrubbers for control of fumes, effluent neutralization systems and thermal oxidizers for destruction of Volatile Organic Compound’s for emissions control.
  • Part of a project team to design and build production plants in China and India, installation of a $1M thermal oxidizer, and $3M renovation of a production line.
  • Designed, built and installed two cut-to-length systems each at $4,000. These were in operation for 10 years and averaged one half-hour downtime per month. These replaced systems that averaged 23 hours down time per month. Commercially available systems with similar functions and accuracy cost $45,000.
  • Designed an on line optical density measurement system for $1,000. Commercial system was available from Germany for $14,000 and was no longer manufactured due to low volume sale. This on line system ensured product consistency, reliability, reduced waste and eliminated manual inspection.
  • Suggested and installed air-to-air heat exchanger to capture heat from exhaust of drier tunnel. This resulted in annual energy savings of $40,000.
  • Designed and built on line electronic gap measuring system with an accuracy of 2 Microns. This is very useful in web coating systems and saves lots of down time.
