Senior Consultant

Responsibilities:

  • Translated 110 recurring monthly excel reports for the Cognos 10.2.2 platform. With the help of Informatica ETL processes and Cognos scheduled reports, the BI Transition Project saved ROPS approximately 300 monthly hours of hands on report maintenance.
  • Provided feedback to Informatica developers and data modelers about changes that were necessary in the ROPS data mart. Because reports were being created using a newly developed data mart, there would often be issues with attribute naming conventions and inefficient aggregations. With a background in star schema data modeling and database management systems, I was able to prepare proper feedback of these issues. This often-included written summaries, index and dimensional modeling recommendations, as well as data samples to illustrate the before and after processing that was necessary.
  • Developed roadmap, with accompanying OLAP POC’s and project plan for an ad hoc reporting project to begin after the BI Transition Project is complete. The solution involved several OLAP Cubes and the use of Cognos Workspace Advanced/Report Studio templates.
  • Provided numerous sessions on the Cognos10 reporting toolset to front end business analysts. Customized materials were created from a variety of templates developed over the past 12 years and applied the ROPS data set.
  • I also had the opportunity to participate in a Tableau pilot project where 10 of the above-mentioned reports were developed using Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server. I would classify my skills in this area as intermediate.

Senior Consultant

Responsibilities:

  • Translated Business Progress Report (BPR) from MS Excel to the Cognos10 BI environment. During the process of documenting the requirements for more than 84 financial summary reports we were able to reduce 25 of those reports into one ad hoc reporting application.
  • Translated the Program Support Actuals Report from MS Excel to the Cognos10 BI environment. The PSA process originally required multiple queries be run against the Enterprise Accounting System and approximately 20-25 hours of manual manipulation within Excel to the produce the report. Through the combining of queries into one Cognos10 report and the pre-staging of hierarchy data, this process now takes approximately 1 hour to complete.
  • Development and maintained MS Project plan for the development cycle of the BPR set of reports.
  • Provided feedback documentation to DBA’s and data modelers about changes that were necessary in the EFBI, ESDW and EPDW data marts. Because reports were being created using a newly developed finance data mart, there would often be issues with attribute naming conventions, attribute hierarchies and inefficient aggregations. With a background in star schema data modeling and database management systems, I was able to prepare proper documentation of these issues. This often-included written summaries, Visio models, index and dimensional modeling recommendations, as well as data samples to illustrate the before and after processing that was necessary.
  • Provided numerous sessions on the Cognos10 reporting toolset to front end business analysts. Customized materials were created from a variety of templates developed over the past 12 years and applied the client’s data set.

Senior BI Consultant

Responsibilities:

  • Entered the project with pre-existing set of report requirements, as well as physical and logical design of the proposed database.
  • Provided feedback on requirements and database designs, with special consideration to query optimization, indexes, reduction of dimensional tables, re-modeling a fact-to-fact join, and designing views for a Cognos8 environment.
  • Worked with one SPU FTE to develop 5 fact tables and 35 dimensional tables. The data mart was developed using Oracle PL/SQL. One fact table was a data integration project onto itself, combining measures from 6 disparate sources including Access, Oracle and Excel.
  • Designed and developed the Framework Manager model that would accompany the data mart. This model was constructed using Cognos8 best practices approach that includes physical, logical, and presentation meta-data layers. It also included both relational and DMR (Dimensional Modeled Relational) presentations of the data.
  • Designed and developed a Budget/CIP OLAP cube that would allow users to re-produce their existing standard Excel reports within a Cognos8 environment. The cube would also give them drill down and drill up capabilities allowing for a more robust analysis.
  • Developed 15 financial reports using a combination of Analysis, Query, and Report Studios within the suite of Cognos8 report writing tools.
  • Mentored two FTE staff members through the Cognos development process.

This model was constructed using a Cognos8 best practices approach that includes physical, logical, and presentation meta-data layers. This model also included a data source that allowed for direct access to the security schema of the transactional database. This schema was then used to limit the data presented to groups of users.
  • Developed 7 applicant and application count reports using a combination of Analysis, Query, and Report Studios within the suite of Cognos8 report writing tools.
  • Mentored three FTE staff members through the entire process.

Confidential, Santa Monica, CA

Senior architect

Responsibilities:

  • Key business requirements were gathered, reviewed and approved by the project sponsor, prior to proceeding with development.
  • This included the use of scoping documents and detailed design specifications for all reports and data models.
  • Relevant source transactional tables and data mart target tables were documented and mapped.
  • Two fact tables and four conformed dimensions were designed using Kimball’s Star Schema methodology, with the D Organization table proving to be the biggest challenge. Requirements stated that the hierarchy of the Organization must be dynamic and automatically updated. The solution was a table where the hierarchy was defined within the meta-data of the table, not in the data. Therefore, as levels were added, subtracted, or shifted, they could be tracked using a Type II SCD.
  • Physical and Logical models were developed using ER Designer.
  • As the client had not decided what ETL software would be purchased, sample scripts were developed within both Data Manager and SQL Server’s SSIS.

Confidential, Corvallis, OR

Senior architect and project manager

Responsibilities:

  • Key business requirements, time lines and resources were documented, and approved, using an MS Project project plan. Scoping documents and detail design specifications for all reports and data models were also developed.
  • Redesigned D Claims and D Claims Status dimensional tables to include start and end dates (Type II SCD) and F Claim Count fact table using SQL Server’s SSIS.
  • Mentored staff through the process of updated the Framework Manager model based on changes to data mart.
  • Designed and assisted in the development of 12 standard reports and a Claims Dashboard. Detailed design specifications for these reports were completed using JAD sessions with key stakeholders. Reports were developed using Report Studio.
  • Integrated Cognos Connection into Sharepoint using Web Parts.
  • Deployed test and production servers against Active Directory using Single Sign-on.
  • Developed a security matrix that tracked the relationship between built-in Cognos groups and roles to those within the AD tree.
  • Through modifications made to the system.xml and default.css files, the Cognos Connection UI was customized to Confidential Health specifications.
  • Provided formal for Report Studio and Cognos Server Administration using customized materials designed specifically for Confidential Health data.

Confidential, Burlingame, CA

Senior BI Consultant

Responsibilities:

  • To present POC to key stakeholders and secure funding for the construction of a Data Warehouse, Cognos Power Cubes were developed first. It was explained to the client that this could produce extremely ambiguous results, depending on the cleanliness of the data. However, the anomalies in the data, coupled with the immediate benefits of the comparative analysis that Power Play allots, became the driving forces behind sponsorship of a Data Warehouse.
  • Using TDWI methodologies and templates, several JAD sessions produced the dimensions and measures necessary for three cubes - Eligibility, Adoption and Placement.
  • Initial cubes used Impromptu Query Definitions (IQD’s), constructed manually using WordPad, and bypassing the development of a Framework Manager model.
  • Designed and deployed distributed Dev, QA, and Production server environments to test the cubes.
  • Designed and deployed Power Cubes as both standalone data sources, to be queried ad hoc using Analysis Studio, as well as source data for a POC Metrics Studio application. A Metrics application was developed against Placement data and it examined targets to actuals, and their tolerances, for measures such as Placement Counts, Length of Stay, Average Length of Stay and Median Length of Stay.
  • Utilized the 15 conformed dimensions and 4 facts discovered through the TDWI sessions to develop Placement dimensional and fact builds within Data Manager. Nightly jobs were developed and deployed using the DEV server and promoted to QA and Production if approved.
  • After completion of the data mart, a Framework Manager model was developed to allow end user access to atomic data through ad hoc reports and queries within Query Studio and Report Studio.
  • Developed and delivered customized materials for Report Studio, Power Play Transformer, Data Manager and Metrics Studio.
