- The Mood Ring. The mood ring was created in 1975 by Josh Reynolds who went to Skip Weingeroff, the largest custom jewelry retailer at that time, to market his invention. Skip called me up and asked me if I could get around Josh's patent---the patent was based on bonding or sealing the Bezel stone to the heat sensitive paper. I explained that if we don't seal the bezel we are not in violation of the paten. A few days later Skip learned that just before I had told him how to beat the patent, David Geller and I had bought ALL of the heat sensitive paper from 3M so Skip was forced to do business with me and David Geller. We sold 600 MILLION worth of cheap mood rings in the next 6 months because I beat the patent filed by Josh.
