Research Associate, Intern

  • Developed a new geophysical testing and calibration site
  • Ensure Quality Control of the instrumentation
  • Validated Quality research data to meet USGA standards
  • Development of a Geophysical Calibration and Test Site for the Department Of Energy, Homeland Security Division. Calibrate geophysical instruments, conduct geophysical surveys and compare data in terms of effectiveness and accuracy of the equipments. Make geological baseline maps, of-site and computer simulation. I worked in the development of a new geophysical testing and calibration site located at the Pittsburgh campus of the National Energy Technology Laboratory NETL . The site is located in a secure area and is partially underlain by an abandoned mine. Baseline data was collected by our team. As part of the study, electromagnetic induction and DC methods were used. The electromagnetic methods were used to determine the terrain's apparent conductivity and the DC method were used to determine ground resistivity. Both methods were deployed in horizontal and vertical dipole modes. By analyzing data we were able to describe the special distribution of the apparent conductivity and resistivity. Further data were griddled using capabilities of Spatial Analyst part of Arc-GIS package and inverted using two different algorithms.
  • Results were used as a baseline data that will be used for ensuring accurate calibration of NETL's existing instruments prior to field deployment to create field facilities for the University of Pittsburgh and West Virginia University, and as a test site for future technologies. Additionally, the research may help to identify underground mines or mine pools that can be use for onsite geothermal cooling and heating systems.
