The factors in our choice in hardware and software solution was meeting the business requirements and cost. After several months of evaluating EMC, and Hitachi we chose a total open systems architecture which consisted of the Hitachi 9960s Lightning Arrays, InRange Fibre Director FC9000 and Scalar 1000 AIT2 tape library in one SAN using only FC-SW, no FC-AL.

  • Cluster using Veritas Cluster Software. We set up fail-over nodes for all environments production, test, and development. We were simply using fail-over and not using the native DB2 partitioning.
  • Enterprise SAN Solution
  • Due to cost of having separate HBAs for both a Tape SAN and a separate Disk SAN, I needed to choose hardware that did not have specific drivers or unique requirements. The solution was using was one, InRange Director the FC9000, which is a 64-port switch that can go to 128 ports and by end of 2001, go to 256 ports. Two, Hitachi 9900 Lightning Arrays 9960 that provided 10x the performance of the top EMC array with out the use of special drivers need for each HBA. Third, the Scalar 1000 AIT2 tape silo was it was cost effective and space efficient. This solution has been implemented in both production and corporate environment.

Projects

  • Converted Confidential Core application databases from NT alpha to Sun Solaris Setup a High Availability environment with 3 E5500s with A5200 fiber drives for OLTP Oracle database servers. HA was achieved by using software to sync the three E5500s databases. One server was active and the other two were backups. One of the backups was located off-site to provide disaster recovery. Veritas Database Edition was used to provide software raid and mirroring. Quick IO will be used in the future as a way to provide true real-time transaction. This was then upgraded to 3 E6500s on a SAN with 5 A3500FC.
  • Created a Solaris and Oracle development environment.
  • Used E450s and E250s some with hardware raid controllers to provide an adequate developing and QA environment. Provided guidelines to DBA to help controller the number of databases per server. The UNIX group uses these servers also as QA for new system updates as well as for testing patches.
  • Setup HA servers for WebhouseTM
  • Used two E4500s and A1000s for OLTP Database. HA was again achieved by using software to sync to the two server's databases. Two E250s were used as interim transactional servers using Veritas to provide software Raid 1 0. The NT application servers use the E250s in a round-robin fashion. Then upgraded the environment to 6 E6500 on a SAN with 8 A3500FC and a StorageTek 9740. The 9740 and the A3500FC were on two separate SANs as requested by Sun.
  • Setup OLTP servers for YardsaleTM
  • Deployed three E450s with hardware raid controllers and software to provide the HA environment by syncing the databases. Currently setting up two E4500 with A1000s to provide for larger capacity and faster transactions once Yardsale goes national.
  • Enterprise Database Solution
  • Setup two StorageTek 9740 for both corporate and production sites. The SAN was FC-AL on Brocade 16 port switches and SCSI to fibre bridges. NetBackup was used as the enterprise backup software.
