EXAMPLE PROJECTS

  • AT THE GROUP HEALTH RESEARCH INSTITUTE, I made a fair number of data pulls for retrospective studies for trials of new treatments. For example, I found all the HMO members between ages a b that had come in for back-pain between dates d e, but did not take drugs f g for it. I culled such members from larger files, merged them into working study files. Sometimes I passed these to biostatisticians that was that. At other times I randomly sampled the files, fed selected members to Access files for study tracking mailing query of interest letters, etc. .
  • AT THE UW DENTAL SCHOOL, I did the data management, statistics, figures/tables on two published dosage studies.
  • FOR MY FORMER CAREER as a forestry/geology scientist, I was one of three scientists who clinched the argument that the Pacific Northwest experiences magnitude 9 earthquakes. Using statistical methods, I helped establish the scientific basis for ongoing earthquake retrofitting tsunami preparation from British Columbia to northern California. Along my campaign, I authored a 1997 short paper in Nature, the world's leading scientific journal. I also co-authored the graphics-rich book, The Orphan Tsunami of 1700 UW Press, 2005 . The data-presentation skills I learned from the latter project especially enlarged my capabilities as an analyst/programmer/writer because they help me package findings in a way that readers will get it. I can draft the graphs, tables, statistical methods sections of data reports manuscripts like few others.
