Migrations: Phire

Scheduler: ControlM, PeopleSoft Process Scheduler

Ticketing Tool: Incident and Change Management

Database: Oracle 11g

Operating System: Red Hat Linux 9.1 and Windows

  • Responsibilities: CapitalOne had recently acquired HSBC and ING. Therefore we had to integrate the HR data for these companies into our HCM application. This was a major initiative at Capital One. Capital One uses ADP for running payroll, and we have an ongoing process to in source the payroll calculations for running payrolls. These were the major initiatives on the HCM application. My role was to perform regular maintenance and support of PeopleSoft Financials, HCM, and PORTAL application, and also support these special projects for HCM. Here I have outlined some of my roles and responsibilities.
  • Supported all the Financials, HCM and PORTAL applications.
  • Worked on integration broker issues, and tuning app messages to gain performance. Tuned the PUBSUB server processes. Created dedicated channels for processing the WORKFORCE SYNC message.
  • Created various UNIX shell scripts for automating the regular maintenance process.
  • Using PSADMIN monitored the work done by each app server processes, and thus tuned the app server processes, by changing the number of min/max for PSAPPSRV, and the recycle timeout settings. Tuned JVM heap size on web servers.
  • Applied Tax Updates on the HCM application using Change Assistant.
  • The HCM application was missing many patches, and bundles. Since Maintenance pack 6 cumulative contains all the bundles and fixes released for HCM 9.1, therefore applied Maintenance pack 6 cumulative on all the HCM applications. This was a major initiative taken by me, and involved a lot of testing and retrofitting.
  • Support special projects in HCM on an ongoing basis. As a part of this special project, we had to build many additional environments for HCM. Thus installed Web Logic, Tuxedo, Oracle client, PeopleTools, HCM application, created the PS HOME, web server domains, application server domains, process scheduler servers, and imported the database for other environments. Then performed the post import activities like resetting passwords, updating the PSDBOWNER table, etc.
  • Perform migrations using PHIRE a PeopleSoft migration tools .
  • Used ControlM for scheduling jobs. ControlM is a scheduling tool which can be used to scheduler PeopleSoft batch jobs as well as run UNIX scripts.
  • Our HCM application has 7 physical servers. Each server has a web multi-server domain, and 3 application server domains. Therefore we have 21 application server domains for productions. Due to this, the process of building cache takes a very long time and users would face a lot of performance issues after clearing cache. Thus I created a pre-load cache project and included the frequently used objects in this pre-load cache project, and used this project to build app server cache. This helped in enhancing the performance of the application.
  • Collected performance information for production servers, like CPU usage, memory utilization, and user counts, for all the 7 HR production servers, and 2 Financials, and Portal servers. Imported this data into excel, and generated graphs for CPU/Memory utilization, and user count. These graphs helped us understand which times were the busiest, and how much did the CPU/Memory go up with the user count increasing. This analysis further helped us better tune our application servers and web servers.
