The Medical Services Division of the North Dakota Department of Human Services (DHS) is the State agency responsible for administering the Medicaid program in North Dakota. The North Dakota Information Technology Department (ITD) and the DHS Division of Information Technology (DoIT) are responsible for the operations and maintenance of the Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS). The Medicaid Program provides medical services to eligible Medicaid recipients of the Social Security Act through enrolled providers and health plans.

DHS was in the process of rewriting the existing MMIS legacy application using 21st century technologies. Current MMIS system handles various tasks including Medicaid claims processing submitted by providers through paper or electronically, adjudicating POS claims, issuing checks or notices of denial for claims. MMIS system has also many subsystems and interfaces from where data is being sent to and received from.
