Senior Systems Analyst

  • As the sole IT professional on staff for this SMB of 24,000,000 sales, the professional responsibilities are very broad. Hired initially to lead the selection and deployment of an ERP system the role quickly expanded to include all aspects of information technology for the company.
  • Duties and accomplishments included:
  • Investigated all ERP systems currently available in the market and created a formal request for quote, specifically detailed for Uckele's business requirements.
  • Subsequently was responsible for review and critique of vendors who submitted a qualified quote. Final decision was made by a management committee based on the prepared recommendations. This was a 400,000 investment for the company.
  • As project leader was then responsible for the system implementation. The ERP vendor was guided thru required system set up and the conversion of previous system data base. Parallel testing and user training was my responsibility as well. As Uckele is a relative small company many users were cross trained in multiple aspects of the business processes.
  • Network Infrastructure Upgrades were necessary to support the enhanced ERP operation. The Microsoft Windows Network was strengthened with additional memory, expanded switches and additional Remote User licenses to enable the application server based ERP and wireless HHC operation.
  • User support for all existing systems and management of ancillary resources became a necessary role to promote effective system use and control of information technology expense. Examples include the standardization of all desk top computers as all were upgraded to Win 7 , standardization of vendors and supplies and negotiation of vendor contracts for network printers.
  • .Early enhancements of existing operations , prior to the deployment of the new ERP included:
  • Designed, programmed and implemented barcode scanning to interface order pick slips to UPS World Ship in the retail shipping department . This deployment saved significant daily man hours and allowed Uckele to extend same day shipment by several hours each day.
  • Designed, programmed and implemented an in-house developed Warehouse Inventory Management System. This system provided interface to the old ERP system and created inventory by location Inquiry, Display and Update , Work Order Pick Slips and Management Reporting. This proved to be an excellent tool with enhanced inventory accuracy and enhanced efficiency in material handling. This was a necessary one year run up to the new ERP .
  • Designed, programmed and implemented barcode warehouse receipt label

  • printing. Added to 2 the warehouse operation experienced greatly improved accuracy in inventory in all material handling.
  • Designed, programmed and implemented barcode shipping labels to meet customer requirements for order shipments.
  • Please note that prior to 1, 3 and 4, the company had no experience with barcode scanning and printing .
  • Enhanced operation of EDI to support new customers including Amazon.com.
  • As Business Systems Analyst with total responsibility for equipment and vendor selection, implementation and support of all the above it was exciting and rewarding to add to the overall success at Uckele during a period of progressive and profitable growth for the company.
  • After leaving NSK Corporation during the great economic downturn it was an exciting time as professional energies were turned to sole entrepreneur operation of a photography business. While this was very satisfying personally and the realization of an often imagined opportunity the timing was not good. The emergence of digital cameras and a very low rate of weddings and other photography events did not yield success. The decision was made to again focus on information technology.

  • Recruited back to NSK in 1991 I re joined the company as it was experiencing significant growth. The systems that I had put in place 8 years earlier were straining to keep pace with the addition of new products, increased volumes and the accompanying demands on systems.
  • The first task was to streamline the customer service systems so that new and lessor experienced associates could achieve maximum performance. The need for this enhancement was highlighted because the decision had been made to centralize the CSR's for all products, back to the central office. This meant that many of the experienced CSR's in the regional sales offices and distribution centers would be lost. The technical approach was new to NSK but would now be considered rather elementary. I developed a Work Flow communication methodology between all online tasks. This now would be called Goggle-like approach assisted the dialog with customers, automated Forecast maintenance and pricing, located available inventory for sales order entry and expedited the generation of pick-slips to the shipping location. Typical one function mainframe CICS transactions were converted to a seamless GUI presentation of information and updates .
  • At this same time I was Project Leader to interface daily orders via EDI from over 100 customers to automatic order entry. I had the advantage of having created the host system. With that knowledge it was possible to seamlessly format, edit and pass to the same business application used by online CSR's the entry of thousands of order lines daily. The process subsequently automatically generated pick slips to the warehouses for immediate shipment. This relief of transcription tasks greatly enhanced the operation of NSK CSR's.
  • Subsequently NSK added Call Center front end processing to this now more effective sales order process.
  • Other like developments included tracking forecast, receipts, inventory and sales on a moving 36 month basis by item. This visibility gave the materials management and distribution teams the beginning of the tools they needed for effective planning of inventory that serviced 3 different markets, with 3 different goals.
  • Aftermarket, Industrial OEM and 1st/ 2nd tier Automotive . This was also an early introduction to NSK of LEAN. My affiliation with APICS VP of Education allowed me to bring Certified in Production and Inventory Management training CPIM on site. This education greatly enhanced the abilities of NSK to meet their new goals of effective inventory management. Controlled and edited mainframe data was ported to Unix/MySQL data warehouse giving tools for effective management decisions .
  • In 2006 /2007 NSK Japan installed the ERP package known as Chess. I was selected to be the Project Leader for the North American deployments. The system was successfully installed in the Ball Screw operations of NSK. It was not adapted by the other manufacturing operations. However many of the features were incorporated into other systems. Enhanced bill of material and routings, Work Order Control .
  • In 2001 NSK recognized the need for more sophisticated tools for distribution management. This lead to my assignment as Project Leader to develop a plan to select and deploy a Warehouse Management System. The project proceeded to develop an RFQ, evaluate over 30 WMS products, conduct vendor evaluations, execute proof of concept trials and lead the user group in final vendor /product selection. In less than nine months we were given the green light to go, only to be sidelined by the now infamous 9/11 induced business downturn. As a less cost alternative I designed, lead the programming and implemented an in house developed WMS.
  • My last project at NSK 2007-2008 was as the Project Leader to install the beta version of a new in-house developed world wide ERP system. This system internally know as RAS replaced the core systems I had installed in 1983-1984 at NSK. I choose NSK-Mexico for the beta site and worked with Mexico City sales and distribution facility. The old core system had been deployed for NSK-Mexico during the years I was away from the company. As a precursor to deploying the new system it was my task to work with the Mexico City NSK management and staff to create more discipline and accuracy. Having done this we moved on with the deployment. My role was also to add the necessary unique features see Note at bottom needed by NSK-Mexico and convert the business data from the old system Mainframe CICS/VSAM to load the new system Unix/Oracle . Implementation of the new system was successful and was used as a model for deployment of this new system RAS worldwide.

  • Pedimento Support: All inventory imported into Mexico must be tracked from receipt into inventory thru discrete shipment to a customer. Port of Entry, date, classification and assigned Pedimento number by part and quantity. This was accomplished by the creation of additional database elements and capturing the data at time of receipt. Addition of this business data to the necessary reports created by crystal reports was seamless.
  • Bill of Lading and Invoice Rules: As in almost all foreign countries Mexico government accounting rules/laws require unique information to identify terms with each customer, the customer type, and method of shipment. Having developed the specifications for these additional requirements I designed the additional Oracle data base elements and the processes to support the gathering and certification of this business information.

  • I was recruited to join the Renkim Corporation a contract programming and facilities management company to facilitate their first mainframe contract with their biggest customer, the Ford Motor Company. Renkim had developed a series of systems that automated the gathering and analysis of diagnostic data. These systems ran on the then IBM System 38. Ford Motor Company requested that Renkim submit a plan to enhance this collection of systems by designing one comprehensive system and deploy this new system on the then IBM System 390 running OS/MVS on a DB2 database. I joined the project as Project Leader in the very early phase of definition. It was my responsibility to work with the Renkim team of analysts, programmers, the sales and marketing teams to create a plan to communicate with the many Ford Motor Company entities . The Ford groups represented the business process for the Parts and Service Division, Fleet Management and the Data Diagnostic Management System. Each of these entities had a unique system that had been developed by Renkim and was deployed on the Renkim host System 38. Ford Motor Company IT development methodology was evolving during this time. As we worked with Ford IT we were instrumental in their formation of rules and procedures to control system design, especially as it related to the deployment of DB2 based systems.
  • As the project progressed to the development of the database design and programming I moved into the DBA position. It was unique to have a non-Ford associate with DBA privileges. The project was complete on time and within budget.

I was recruited to join the then Libbey Owens Ford Company, later to become Pilkington. My assignment was to assist the Project Leader in the ongoing project of selecting an MRP package for deployment for all of the North American operations. Subsequent fit, cost and time constraints resulted in my new assignment to develop a unique system to support scheduling, production reporting, inventory management and costing. Working with the corporate management teams of Marketing, Materials Management and Accounting and the individual plant 6 in the US and Canada management and operational teams we developed, programmed and implemented a comprehensive system to support the entire North American operations. At the same time the individual locations were converted from a non-standard hardware and software environment to common network with a centralized data center. Systems were IBM mainframe, Mantis/Supra relational data base with 3rd generation application development ,

  • I was recruited to join then Hoover-NSK Corporation, later to be known as NSK Corporation of North America. A conversion from an obsolete batch system to an online real-time environment was 2 years overdue when I joined the team. I replaced the project leader, staffed and trained additional team and with support from management reshaped the effort. Subsequently, the conversion was then completed in 9 months.
  • This bearing manufacturing, sales and distribution company became solely owned by the parent NSK Ltd in 1984. At that time the decision was made to deploy the systems developed in Japan for all of the North American operations. I traveled to Japan and developed a working relationship with the NSK corporate IT staff. Together we brought the systems for Manufacturing, Forecasting, Distribution, Sales and Financial management to the US. My role as project leader for the deployment was:
  • Work with NSK North America to define unique business needs and incorporate into the system.
  • Manage the project by selecting IT and Business User team members and then be the liaison to Japan.
  • Supervise the programming of the additions and modifications of the Japanese system to meet US North American business needs.
  • Manage the conversion and deployment of the newly developed systems.
