As an analyst, here's what I typically do:
- I help the firm identify its native, natural business services without bias toward the existing systems and processes which are usually the problem and need to be wrapped up .
- I break the services down into irreducible components irreducible units of business logic . These units tend to be very stable with respect to the structure of their rules and process.
- I write rigorous use cases I have the template describing each unit of business logic each component , including the decisions that can be automated.
- I abstract and document the rules so the process becomes thinner and much more configurable like a true service.
- 5 I document the rules either by converting them to data in tables, or by describing the rule set in order. I have a syntax I recommend for doing this.
- The benefit of this analysis is the rapid coding of reusable and highly configurable business service components. The abstracted rules can be imported into any existing rules engine. The components very often exploit existing legacy systems which can be called.
- Even if you are not adopting a Service Oriented Architecture this approach increases the speed and quality of the software development life cycle. It is compatible with Agile methods. Nothing speeds up development like relieving the developers of having to figure out the business rules themselves. If your analysts are not doing business rules abstraction and documentation, then they are not doing the job.
