- OPERATIONAL LEADERSHIP: I am currently serving as the leader of one of Department of Homeland Security's most innovative teams, focusing on emerging communication and new media technologies to improve our citizen-customer's access to information before, during and after disasters
- I led the creation of the first federal government SMS texting platform, winning the 2011 Summit Emerging Media Award for Innovation. The platform permits citizen-customers to receive regular preparedness messages and permits search-by-location for shelters and disaster recovery centers. As a leader in social media technologies, Blackberry presented us with their Wireless Achievement Award for the FEMA smart phone app which is also available on iOS and Android devices. Our newest award winning app feature is the Disaster Reporter, which encourages citizens to upload disaster photos and view them on a crowd-sourcing map. This feature was used widely during the 2013 Boulder Colorado floods and provided an invaluable resource to first responders. The FEMA app features individual preparedness plans and contact reminders, available even if cellular service is not available, links to assistance web sites, and comprehensive data for actions before, during, and after various disasters.
- I also led the creation of DIAMOND Digital Imagery and Media On Demand system which provides storage, management, and organization of digital media files. This cloud-based system will be used interactively by all DHS components for their documents, audio files, videos, and photographs.
- I led my team in a total re-creating of the FEMA.gov and Ready.gov web presence, using Drupal open source technology. I partnered closely with the DHS Enterprise System Development Office team to move our content management system to the DHS CGI cloud hosting environment. Further, development of these systems was done in a way that all DHS components can leverage the Drupal modules and cloud environment. All DHS components are following suit, and my team is providing training and expertise as they move through the development process.
