Major Achievements / ThyssenKrupp Budd as Staff Engineer
- Situation: Ford Motor Company along with the other domestic OEMs were facing increased pressure to be more competitive in the global marketplace. There was an absolute need to ensure their tier-one suppliers did a much better job of managing, people, activities and resources to assist them in improving their overall efficiencies in the area of schedule, cost and quality of their projects and products they produced.
- Action: As the Staff Engineer I conceived, drafted and published for the Stamping and Assembly division a manual that laid out a systematic step by step road map to manage projects from the project award phase through buy off on the supplier's floor. This undertaking enabled our project managers to document, track, report status in such a way that they were now able to manage their projects in a much more effective manner. This procedure enabled our people to: 1 identify deficiencies in the supplier's declared earned value and schedule, 2 empowered them to mitigate risk, institute / require contingency plans and mandate corrective action measures, and 3 provided the necessary documentation to demonstrate we were in compliance with QS 9000 and TS16949. Our project managers were now empowered with constructive tools to work with the supplier base to meet or exceed customer expectations.
- Result: The impact of creating and implementing this procedure resulted in a net reduction of several engineering changes per project down to thus saving the company thousands of dollars, and countless hours of rework. It also revealed the exact status of projects in every area so that better proactive management decisions could be made. These savings were passed along directly to the customer.
