• At Confidential I led a project at one of their clients to implement a private cloud based on Mirantis OpenStack. The project included initial business case justification, project approval/initiation, implementation of the cloud, establishing ongoing management processes and migration of 30 applications ( 900 VMs) to the cloud. The savings from this versus the existing in house services rates were projected to be $14 million over 3 years. The project cost $4 million, had up to 15 people concurrently and lasted 12 months.
• At Confidential I managed the largest VMware installation in the world, building out 2000 new VMs per year. In addition I managed the migration of my team from an 80% US-based team to an 80% India based team as part of an effort to reduce personnel costs. I hired and developed the team in India, and reworked the build process, to a level at which they were a largely independent group capable of doing VMware build work with limited support. I also program managed the build of VMware servers across 15 data centers on 3 continents.
• At Confidential I led the UNIX “virtualization” project. The project involved putting multiple applications on one server, versus the traditional one application per server approach. Over 18 months this approach eliminated the need for almost 1000 UNIX servers, with cost savings from hardware and software in excess of $20 million. This included managing the build out, capacity planning of all UNIX servers, budgeting, and developing the service request process. This also involved building out managed services for Oracle, Oracle RAC, DB2, Sybase and Websphere.
• At Confidential I led the migration of over fifty existing applications (400+ servers) to the newly built virtualization/managed services environment. Migrations involved migrating from Oracle v9/10 to Oracle v11 (RAC and single DB instances), DB2 v7/8 to v9 and Websphere v4/5 to v6. Also included integration with networking and load balancers.
• At Confidential I led the turnaround of the Storage Management department. I established a strategy and multi-year implementation plan, improved staffing, led the development of an architecture and selected products, reduced the budget by 50% in under two years (with 100% capacity growth), improved service, and initiated the business case for and managed the implementation of the required projects.
• At Confidential I led the evaluation, justification and implementation of disk snapshot functionality. The project was implemented in six weeks from final approval, enabling us to be in production by the next quarter-end cycle, allowing several business units to meet SLAs for the first time in over five years.
• At Confidential I led the financial justification, initiated the projects, and led the implementation to standardize and consolidate mainframe tape from thirteen down to three tape silos, reducing our tape budget by 70%, improving operational efficiency and improving our ability to do disaster recovery.
• At Confidential I led the development of a 24-hour disaster recovery strategy/plan to support all critical applications. The plan was only marginally more expensive than the existing hot site solution and could be implemented in half the time of competing plans (from the outsourcer).
• At Confidential I helped grow our district's revenues from $20 to $75 million/year, developed new business areas (open systems storage, professional services), and met quotas every year. I was SE Manager of the Year twice, in addition to numerous other awards.
• At Confidential I built the Professional Services business in our district from start to $4million/year in revenue. Practice areas included data warehousing and enterprise application integration (EAI), storage management, parallel sysplex, networking design, and software cost optimization.
• At Confidential I personally developed the financial model for marketing the Skyline mainframe, which was adopted by Confidential Corporate Marketing and allowed our district to significantly exceed its objectives.
