HDR is implemented in several phases; the first phase involved systems talking to each other through RPC calls, and further phases involved developing an App Server based system. Clinical Data Service (CDS) is the access service to patient-centric, clinical data persisted in Veteran Health Administration’s Health Data Repository (HDR) data stores. The definition of the data content and associated semantics that will be mediated by CDS is represented by the Veterans Health Information Model (VHIM), the product of a separate project team and presented as a UML model; it is also transformed to a payload model, in the form of XML schema (XSD) documents. CDS is designated to be the authoritative data service for HealtheVet applications and services. CDS will supply read and write services to HDR data that is nationalized, patient-centric, clinical, and viewable. This architecture is based on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA).
