Absence monitoring of hourly employees at Merck was originally performed on a manual basis to calculate personal day’s eligibility, disability pay, manage absentee rate of hourly employees, and to enforce disciplinary action based on Union contract rules. All the absence data was collected from two existing systems, Health Services Information System (HSIS) and Time and Attendance System (TIME). Once the data was manually captured it also had to be manually analyzed. The Absence Monitoring System (AMS) replaced the current process with an intranet application that imports information from the Health Services Information System (HSIS) and the Time and Attendance System (TIME) on a weekly basis, and performs all the required functionality. In addition to the core requirements the users gained the ability to perform various reporting tasks on HSIS and TIME data at both an employee basis and on a business unit basis.
