Semi-Pro/Hobbyist

Responsibilities:

  • Operated Analog 8 & 16, and Digital 24-track facility out of home during this period - Recording media was ¼” 8-track analog (TASCAM 388), dual-synced ½” 8-track analog (TASCAM TSR-8) and 3 linked ly to 3 Tascam 8-track DA-88 (Hi-8 Video format) recorders and Sonic Foundry (now: Magic™) Vegas and Sound Forge production software products.
  • Recorded demos and full release-ready material for various DC and Baltimore area (and some out of town) musical acts.
  • Also performed remote recording services for local bands and a few outdoor festivals.
  • Developed a firm knowledge in the use of outboard analog processing, audio routing, analog and digital editing techniques.
  • Performed repair and/or restoration/transfer of audio from numerous formats including: 8-track commercial and privately recorded stereo tapes, numerous cassette formats (Compact, L, mini and PlayTape™ formats); 78-rpm shellac discs, Edison Cylinders, various reel tape configurations (1/4” through 2” analog).
  • Ceased operation of studio after sale of home in 2002.
  • The Eddie Dimond Project (2016-Present) currently transferring to digital and remastering a nearly 150 reel collection of monophonic jazz recordings made by Washington D.C. pianist Eddie Dimond (d. 1990) of both his trio and other artists, made between 1954 and 1962. Many recordings contain unreleased performances by many jazz legends including: Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, and others.
  • The legal heir of the tapes (Mr. Dimond’s daughter) is researching the potential for licensing the recordings for possible commercial and/or research potential.
  • The transfers are performed via a Tascam 3B 7” ¼” stereo machine, custom modified with a monophonic ½ track playback head to capture 100% of the program material from the tape.
  • Program material is passed through one channel of a FOCUSRITE Scarlett D/A into Magic Sound Forge DAW software and then optimally processed (noise removal, normalization of levels and equalization, de-clicking and program trimming) after monitoring spectrum analysis of the recording.
  • Since the tapes were produced in the 1950’s (original William Orr “Shamrock” brand), no issues with Sticky Shed Syndrome exist.
  • However, the glue holding the edits on the 60+ year-old tape (and there are many edits) has dry-rotted; so these must be replaced with what remaining EditAll edit tape tabs I have remaining in my collection.

Volunteer

Responsibilities:

  • Broadcast team volunteer.
  • Produced weekly 3-hour college radio program “Pennies From Hell” - a mostly free-form live program featuring talk and live/pre-recorded music elements.
  • Typical program would include an eclectic mix of current and older music in all genre’s (pop, rock, country, international, noise, etc.) which provided interstitial space between live improvisational comedy and absurdist conversations designed to engage (and sometimes confuse) the listener.
  • Program elements included frequent use of analog tape loops (prepared on the fly) either using ¼” reel tape (running on Ampex and/or Otari 5050 reel machines) or Fidelipac™ tape cartridges.
  • Also produced live performances by local and travelling musical acts; often requiring the use of personal recording/live reinforcement hardware (mics, processing, mixer, recording) to produce most of these performances due to poor condition of the stations production equipment (which has long since been rectified).
